Hard Resin(CR-39 [trade name]) or Plastic Lenses. Most people refer to this lens type as Plastic Lenses. CR-39 is a trade name used for conventional plastic lenses. The chemical name is allyl diglycol carbonate. This is what the majority of prescriptions are made of. It is available with a scratch resistant coating which helps prevent hair line scratches.

The name CR-39 is an abbreviation for Columbia Resin no. 39 because it was actually the 39th resin formula developed by the Columbia Laboratories.

A hard color filter or lens, that allows the transmission of specific wavelengths(the desired color) and reflects all others, unlike traditional filters that absorb the unwanted wavelengths(all other colors).

Dichroic filters produce the purest in color saturation while absorbing very little heat. These types of filters are ideal for color blending or mixing with other filters or lenses. Dichroic filters are an integral part of automated fixtures when only a limited number of filters can be accommodated inside their compact housings.

Its plastic is composed of a material called Methyl Methacrylate commercially known as lucite or plexiglass. They are ground to specification on a lathe. A plastic button is cut off from a long plastic rod and a back curvature is scooped out according to the measurements that the fitter has taken of the cornea. The curvature of the cornea and the curvature of the lens must correspond exactly.
