CONT

[The author] defines deep work as :"professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push [the] cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate. "

CONT

As the survey operations frequently take place away from [the] mainland or suitable islands or coral reefs, a bottom mounted tide gauge(BMTG) was needed. These gauges had to have [an] operational depth limit of at least [200 metres] and produce [a] depth data with an accuracy of 0. 05%. Several deployment options were envisaged; from a free standing bottom deployment for long term data acquisition without telemetry, through shallow water installation with a hard wire connection to a shore telemetry station, to a bottom mounted gauge equipped with an acoustic modem for communication with [a] surface telemetry buoy for retransmission of the data...

  • Emergency Management
CONT

The devices used to define a soft perimeter vary. Because the perimeter is soft, it does not limit access the same as the hard perimeter. As such, the soft perimeter may use standard traffic control devices in conjunction with law enforcement support to control access. For the G-20 Summit, the soft perimeter allowed pedestrian traffic as well as public transportation(i. e., buses, taxis, and functional needs transportation services) to enter through checkpoints.

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Physics
CONT

Elastic collision law. An important detail which has not been discussed carefully enough in the literature is the collision law for particle–particle and particle–wall collisions in the presence of a deforming particle shape or deforming wall. The collision law that we use is an elastic one, in the following sense : linear andangular momentum are conserved, and the direction of the relative normal surface-to-surface velocityv[ cross-radial] at the point ofcontact is reversed upon collision(but the magnitude is unchanged). It is most convenient to consider binary collisions only and then just take the limit that the ‘‘mass’’ of a hard wall goes to infinity.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique nucléaire
OBS

  • Classification of Coal
DEF

The solid residue of the distillation of coal at temperature above 800°C.

OBS

This lower temperature limit, however, does not apply universally; in some countries(e. g. French and German-speaking countries) the lower limit is 1000°C for hard coal and 900°C for brown coal coke.

Subject field(s)
  • Soil Tests (Construction)
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
DEF

An appliance to determine the liquid limit of a soil [consisting] of a brass dish, handle and cam mounted on a hard rubber base.

OBS

The dish falls through a distance of 1 cm per rotation. A sample of soil 1 cm thick is placed in the dish, with a groove 11 mm wide at the top and 2 mm at the bottom. The number of jars required to close the 2-mm gap along ½ in (12.7 mm) is recorded.

OBS

[The liquid limit device invented] by Atterberg and improved by Casagrande has been widely used in the classification of fine-grained soils.

OBS

Casagrande cup; Casagrande bowl: The cup or bowl is the main part of the Casagrande apparatus and is therefore often used to mean the entire device.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Essais du sol (Construction)
  • Mécanique des sols
CONT
