CONT

As the survey operations frequently take place away from [the] mainland or suitable islands or coral reefs, a bottom mounted tide gauge(BMTG) was needed. These gauges had to have [an] operational depth limit of at least [200 metres] and produce [a] depth data with an accuracy of 0. 05%. Several deployment options were envisaged; from a free standing bottom deployment for long term data acquisition without telemetry, through shallow water installation with a hard wire connection to a shore telemetry station, to a bottom mounted gauge equipped with an acoustic modem for communication with [a] surface telemetry buoy for retransmission of the data...

Caloric requirements can be measured using a metabolic cart. The metabolic cart measures the patient’s oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production at rest.

CONT

Metabolic carts are computerized instruments [that are mounted on a cart and] used to measure metabolic energy expenditure as well as cardiovascular and respiratory function at rest or during exercise.... The uniqueness of a metabolic cart is that, given the appropriate software, stand alone gas analyzers and airflow measurement devices can be integrated with a computer..., color monitor and printer. Peripheral analog input channels allow connection of external devices such as cycle ergometers, treadmills, pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors and heart rate monitors.... the user can select or configure the cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic parameters for simultaneous display in a real time graphic, numeric or hard copy format.

CONT

An anti-bird roosting device for protecting an area, comprising at least a pair of cooperating base elements mounted on the area to be protected, and a plurality of projecting spikes, supported on the base elements and projecting away therefrom into a space above the area to be protected. The spikes are provided in a pattern of interspersed combinations of vertical, obtuse and acute angle-forming projections, in a high spike density that prevents roosting in the protected space. Thus, each point in the area to be protected is defended by more than one spike, each spike coming from a different direction, so as to cross-defend each other, creating a perimeter envelope defense of the air volume surrounding the base elements. Each device is easily and inexpensively prepared as a continuous mesh, whose dimensions can be constructed in standard sizes or in accordance with the needs of the user. The element diameter is typically approximately two millimeters. The small element diameter makes the entire device hard to see from a distance so that it does not detract from the building's aesthetics.

CONT

Porcupine wire, typically marketed as Nixalite, prevents birds from perching and roosting on flat surfaces such as ledges and signs. ... Nixalite is a system of stainless steel strips that feature needle-like wire prongs. The prongs project from a 0.5 centimetre base and come in two lengths - 5 and 9.5 centimetres. Strips are available in either single (90°) or double (180°) radius.

DEF

An appliance to determine the liquid limit of a soil [consisting] of a brass dish, handle and cam mounted on a hard rubber base.

OBS

The dish falls through a distance of 1 cm per rotation. A sample of soil 1 cm thick is placed in the dish, with a groove 11 mm wide at the top and 2 mm at the bottom. The number of jars required to close the 2-mm gap along ½ in (12.7 mm) is recorded.

OBS

[The liquid limit device invented] by Atterberg and improved by Casagrande has been widely used in the classification of fine-grained soils.

OBS

Domaine(s)

CONT

The Physics of Hard Spheres Experiment(PHaSE)... will be performed in a multi-angle Light Scattering Instrument(LSI). Within the LSI, seven hard-sphere samples of varying concentrations of three components will be housed in individual glass cells mounted onto a precision rotary stage. The exact ratio of the three components is dependent on the specific volume fraction of solids to liquids desired; each sample will have a slightly different ratio. During operation, each of the samples will be rotated into position for light scattering/data collection activities using both static and dynamic laser sources. Data will be collected using both a high-definition CCD [Charged Coupled Device] camera to record images of the cells and photon counters to measure light scattering.

CONT

The Physics of Hard Spheres Experiment (PHaSE) will be housed in four of the middeck lockers and one of the SIR [Standard Interface Rack] drawers, demonstrating the accommodations for modular, as well as small, payloads.

A cutter-loader based on the plough principle and designed to cut coal which is too hard for the ordinary plough. Two vertical blades, fitted one at each end of the machine, carry cutting picks which shear the coal from the face by an oscillating motion. The machine is hauled backward and forward along the face by a chain haulage mounted on the tail end of the conveyor. The conveyor and slicer are held up to the coal by pneumatic rams spaced along the goaf side of the conveyor. The sheared coal is forced from the face by the wedge shape of the machine and is loaded on to the armoured conveyor by means of specially shaped ramps. The machine has been designed for seams with a minimum thickness of 4 ft and has a maximum cutting depth of 14 in.
