DEF

A data storage device that uses integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently.

CONT

The term "SSD" is used for two different kinds of products. The first, SSDs based on fast, volatile memory such as SDRAM [synchronous dynamic random access memory], ... The second type of SSD uses flash memory to store data.

CONT

An SSD does much the same job functionally(e. g., saving your data while the system is off, booting your system, etc.) as an HDD [hard disk drive], but instead of a magnetic coating on top of platters, the data is stored on interconnected flash memory chips that retain the data even when there's no power present.

CONT

DEF

The use of military and economic means to influence the behavior or interests of other political bodies.

CONT

This form of political power is often aggressive, and is most effective when imposed by one political body upon another of lesser military and/or economic power. Hard power contrasts with soft power, which comes from diplomacy, culture and history.

CONT

At one extreme was hard or command power--the ability to change what others do through coercion(followed next on the continuum by inducement). At the other extreme was soft or co-optive power--the ability to shape what others want through attraction(preceded by agenda-setting).

  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
DEF

Instrument for measurement of the amount of the solid precipitation deposit.

CONT

Ice meter... Objective methods of the icing measurements are based on the icing weight determination related to the unit of area(in meteorology) or to the unit of length(in power supply). The hard rime was determined with the aid of the so-called icing meter bars. They were represented by two wooden bars of 32 mm diameter and 1 m length, i. e. the surface area equals 0, 1 m² per 1 bar. Bars were placed horizontally and perpendicularly to each other. First of them was oriented in north-south direction, the second east-west. The amount of water was measured and result recalculated to kg. m-². These ice meter bars made possible quite reliable evaluation of the icing without having the continual measurement. Nevertheless they are not used contemporary in the meteorological service.

OBS

Ice-accretion indicators are as capable of measuring freezing drizzle as freezing rain. They are not designed to measure wet snow nor in-cloud icing. Measurements of other types of atmospheric icing are not included in our statistics.

DEF

  • Racquet Sports
DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].
