This class of wheat is grown in the Great Plains area of the U. S. which includes the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming. In 1981, it formed about 40% of total U. S. wheat production. The wheat is a strong type(gluten quality) and its flour produces good bread. Its average protein content is in the range of 12 to 13%; normally it has good test weight(75 to 77 kilograms per hectolitre) and is low in moisture content(11 to 12%). With proper conditioning it gives good milling results. The most prominent varieties of this group in 1981 were Newton, Larned, Eagle and Scout. Hard red winter wheat has no subclasses for grading purposes. It is assigned numerical grades but has somewhat higher(2 pounds for No. 1 and 1 pound for other grades) test weights. 1, record 9, English, - hard%20red%20winter%20wheat

An instrument combining a pulsed laser transmitter and optical receiver (usually a telescope) with an electronic signal processing unit used for the detection and ranging of various distant targets in the atmosphere, analogous to the principles of operation of microwave radar. 6, record 10, English, - lidar
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The lidar technique operates on the same principle as radar; in fact, it is sometimes called laser radar. The principal difference between lidar and radar is the wavelength of the radiation used. Radar uses wavelengths in the radio band whereas lidar uses light, that is usually generated by lasers in modern lidar systems. 7, record 10, English, - lidar
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 2 CONT
There are three basic generic types of lidar :range finders, DIAL, and Doppler lidars. Rande finder lidars are the simplest lidars. They are used to measure the distance from the lidar instrument to a solid or hard target Differential Absorption Lidar(DIAL) is used to measure chemical concentrations(such as ozone, water vapor, pollutants) in the atmosphere. Doppler lidar is used to measure the velocity of a target High-resolution DEMs with vertical accuracy as good as 10 cm can be created with Lidar. Lidar is also better able to map bare earth elevations in forested or vegetated areas than other methods because only a single laser pulse needs to be able to reach between trees and the ground. 8, record 10, English, - lidar

Probability of Finding [an Avalanche] Victim. A probe contact is usually recognized by a soft, spongy feeling. The theoretical probability of contacting a buried person is about 70% for coarse probing on the first pass; with fine probing, the probability is close to 100%. In practice, the probability of finding a victim is lower. For example, probes can often deflected in the snow, altering the effectiveness of the search grid. In addition, probers sometimes fail to notice when the probe has hit a body. 1, record 12, English, - probe%20contact
