On most birds which have large patches of missing feathers, the problem is a result of the other birds’ picking them.... Feather picking can begin when birds are overcrowded which then turns into a habit that is hard to break. Once the habit is formed, [the] flock must be given more room and the suspected ’peckers’ or ’peckees’ separated from the flock. Ice meter... Objective methods of the icing measurements are based on the icing weight determination related to the unit of area(in meteorology) or to the unit of length(in power supply). The hard rime was determined with the aid of the so-called icing meter bars. They were represented by two wooden bars of 32 mm diameter and 1 m length, i. e. the surface area equals 0, 1 m² per 1 bar. Bars were placed horizontally and perpendicularly to each other. First of them was oriented in north-south direction, the second east-west. The amount of water was measured and result recalculated to kg. m-². These ice meter bars made possible quite reliable evaluation of the icing without having the continual measurement. Nevertheless they are not used contemporary in the meteorological service. 3, record 6, English, - ice%20meter

There are basically three types of service : 1) the flat service; 2) the slice service; 3) the spin service. Note that the term "serve" is ambiguous in English. On the one hand it may refer to the result of going through(e. g. he can hit a very hard "serve") ;finally, it may even refer to one of the two attempts allowed to complete a service(e. g. he is about to make his second "serve"-French : deuxième balle de service). A powerful shot used on a high return, and ... hit from above the head, like a serve. 5, record 8, English, - overhead%20smash
Record number: 8, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Usage : strictly speaking the term "overhead" is a generic, i. e. it denotes any stroke, usually-but not always-a smash, executed like a serve by raising the racket above the head and swinging down hard. Some journalists are guided by this rule of thumb, however unreliable it may be :"If it is a hard stroke, use the term "smash" if it is a defensive stroke, use "overhead". However, the term "smash" more often than not can only denote the actual stroke, and not the result of the stroke, whereas the term "overhead" can denote either the stroke or the result. Consider the following phrases :"He frequently dumps overheads(and not :"to dump a smash") into the net; he hit a short overhead(and not : to hit a short smash). 6, record 8, English, - overhead%20smash

Many purists have tried in vain to maintain the distinction between a "shot" and a "drive", the latter yielding a ball with a lot of pace while the former term being more generic, i. e., not necessarily a ball hit hard, but simply the result of the racquet making contact with the ball-a slice backhand or drop volley are both "shots" that require more touch than power. The term "drive" implies the use of power. 4, record 10, English, - cross%2Dcourt%20drive

... When wheat is milled into flour, starch granules are subjected to physical damage and granules may be fractured, cracked, chopped or otherwise changed. As a result, normal flours may contain varying amounts of starch granules damaged to varying degrees in addition to intact starch granules. Hard wheat flours usually have much higher starch damage values than soft wheat flours. Starch granules in soft wheat endosperm are loosely bound in the kernel and easily released in milling; on the other hand, starch granules in hard wheat endosperm are firmly bound in a much stronger protein matrix and therefore more liable to damage when endosperm fragments are reduced during milling. 1, record 11, English, - hard%20wheat%20flour

Rain fell as high as 1700 m in some areas, soaking the upper snowpack. Expect a raincrust to form below this elevation as temperatures begin to cool the next few days, and then expect this to be covered with additional new snow. There are a few weak layers in this storm snow and, while warm temperatures are helping heal these weaknesses, whumpfing and cracking was still reported in the Kootenay Pass area on a north facing slope at 2100 m. For the most part new snow is sticking well to the Christmas crust buried 50-70 cm deep. This crust is providing a good bridging layer for the weak facet and surface hoar crystals below the crust, but this layer still remains a concern. 1, record 13, English, - bridging%20layer

In avalanche forecasting, a bridging layer [=une couche dure] is a layer of strong(hard) snow that is often quick thick. Once a layer gets to a certain thickness and hardness, it has enough strength to absorb the load that is applied from above, thus preventing this load from triggering a weakness underneath this "bridge. "If ever the "bridge" fails then the result is normally a very large avalanche. 2, record 13, English, - bridging%20layer

However, for lower-resolution images-the kind that are more readily available for different places and for different times-each pixel is likely to represent a mix of different land-cover types. Long Distance Caregiving. In today's society, it has become fairly common for grown children to leave home to pursue different lifestyles and work opportunities. It's also becoming more common for parents to move.... As a result of all this movement, a growing number of adult sons and daughters are discovering just how hard it is to try to ensure the welfare of aging parents who live hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles away. A quick-fix solution to this problem of distant caregiving might seem to be to have the parents relocate, to bring them nearer to the grown children and their families, perhaps even to have them move in with them. 2, record 21, English, - long%2Ddistance%20caregiving

1, record 21, French, - soins%20%C3%A0%20distance

A shock or strut damps excessive vehicle spring motion by the controlled movement of fluid under pressure. Fluid provides the resistance to movement. The amount of that resistance is controlled by valving. Before Monroe gas charged shocks and struts, valve orifices could not be enlarged to increase riding comfort without losing damping effectiveness. So valving was compromised in one of two directions : soft or hard valving. With soft valving, fluid flows more easily. The result is a smooth ride, but with poor handling--and a lot of roll and sway. When valving is hard, fluid flows less easily. Handling is improved, but the ride can become rough. 2, record 22, English, - soft%20valving

Gusseting occurs because the inner pages of a folded, closed head signature cannot move independently of the adjacent pages to compensate for progressively varying centres and radii of curvature of backbone fold from the outside pages to the centre pages of the signature. As a result, the paper in the centre of the signature is forced forward at the backbone, but being restrained at the head, it assumes corrugations or waves, and in extreme cases, these waves fold over and become hard wrinkles. 3, record 24, English, - gusseting
