Surface Chemistry. In the present case, we are looking at the surface chemistry of wood. There is a chemical surface and a physical surface.... Some properties of wood are controlled by surface chemistry and some by bulk chemistry. To a wood chemist, it is easy to describe the surface of a piece of 404 stainless steel. To a chemist working with stainless steel, it is easy to describe the surface of wood, but to a wood chemist, it is very hard to define the surface of wood. 2, record 1, English, - wood%20chemist

Rectangular flat otter board. This is the widely used otter board for bottom trawling … The board is assembled by joining planks [of hard wood] and fixing them together with long bolts or mild steel straps. A wide metallic shoe is used to prevent digging into the mud and is rounded off at the leading edge so that it can ride over obstructions. … these boards are hydrodynamically not very efficient and also not suitable for rough grounds as they [cannot] slide over obstacles. 2, record 2, English, - flat%20rectangular%20otter%20board

... conventional steel drum rollers cause cracks in pavements during compaction. This phenomenon is called "roller checking", and is caused by the incompatibility of the hard, round steel drum and the soft, flat asphalt pavement. Because the steel drums are round, only a very small area of contact is presented to the asphalt surface for compaction. As the roller travels along the pavement, the asphalt in front of the roller is pushed ahead, causing a pulling force in the asphalt behind the drum. This pushing and pulling action causes the asphalt to crack. 2, record 34, English, - roller%20checking
