Into this [corral] the buffalo were driven in three separate hands at different times. It required much hard and dangerous riding on the part of the buffalo punchers, and many of the animals escaped numerous times, but perseverance prevailed and two years ago 400 of the herd were successfully rounded up and then driven down the Mission valley into the corrals at Ravalli.

DEF

That part of a landscape referring to trees, plant materials and animals as opposed to non living elements as rock, brick, wood, etc. which are part of the hard landscape.

CONT

Sculpture in the landscape has been used in the landscape since the most ancient of times. It has been used to define the edges of outdoor "rooms", to provide a terminus to a visual axis, and act as a subject of private contemplation. Topiary(the "sculpting" of plant material) aside, hard sculpture provides a pleasing contrast to the soft landscape.

CONT

Hard classification results in one class/pixel [as opposed to] soft classification [that] results in multiple classes/pixel, with associated likelihoods for each class.

CONT

If the resolution of the image is sufficiently high(e. g. 1m or less), it may be that each pixel will represent only one type of land cover, and so we can make an accurate ’hard’ classification. However, for lower-resolution images-the kind that are more readily available for different places and for different times-each pixel is likely to represent a mix of different land-cover types. As a result, a hard classification will probably represent only a part of the pixel and will inaccurately describe the remainder of the area covered by that pixel.

DEF

A stability test of the upper snowpack in which a person taps a shovel placed on top of a column of snow.

CONT

The compression test finds most weak layers in the upper part of the snowpack and helps rate their stability... To start this test, use a shovel, snow saw, ski or snowboard to cut a square column with sides 30 centimetres(12 inches) wide. The column is usually about 1 metre(3 feet) tall. Place a shovel blade on top of the column. Tap with finger tips, about 10 times, moving your hand from the wrist and rate any failure as easy. Tap from the elbow, about 10 times, and rate any failure as moderate. Finally, hit the shovel blade with an open hand or fist, about 10 times, and rate any failure as hard.

CONT

Results from the compression test indicate a weakness down 65 cm. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

compression test: term officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
CONT

P. cineraria is a genuine multipurpose species. It yields excellent firewood and produces high-quality charcoal. The wood is hard and reasonably durable with a variety of small timber uses. The foliage provides nutritious fodder, maximum yields being produced when the trees are pollarded on a three-year rotation. Palatability is good. The pods also provide good fodder, and when young, are a popular vegetable in the human diet in parts of India and Pakistan. In times of famine the bark of the tree is pounded into flour and made into cakes. The bark yields edible gums, is used locally in leather tanning, and is reported to be used to treat scorpion stings and snake bites. The flowers are valuable in honey production.
