CONT

The "gear" of a bicycle relates to the mechanical advantage of the whole drive system. In a low gear, the pedals are easy to turn, but you don’t have to spin very fast to get any speed up. In a high gear, the pedals are hard to turn, but you have to spin very fast to get any speed up. In a high gear, the pedals are hard to turn, but you don’t have to make them turn very fast to make the bicycle go fast... The gear of a bicycle depends on the ratio between the sizes of front and rear sprockets, and the size of the drive wheel.

Custom ski leg with knee joints - a ski leg with two knee joints was designed for an above-knee skier. One knee joint was for walking, and the other for skiing. When the leg is used for skiing, the upper knee joint is locked and the lower knee joint is used - controlled by a compression spring - as it keeps the leg in the flexed position required for skiing. With the amputee’s weight on the coil spring, the ski knee can flex as the amputee goes down the hill but will not collapse and buckle. An adjustable ankle to permit the foot to flex to keep the ski parallel to the hill when going down the slopes was also incorporated.

CONT

Martin's ski leg is an ecto-skeletal unit designed to transmit all the energy from the leg into a conventional ski boot and to take advantage of the boot's engineering. The design has a hard block ankle and no energy storage so leaning into a turn allows pressure to be exerted on the inside or outside edge of the ski.

CONT

OBS

Designed to be attached to a stump and to fit ski bindings.

CONT

Why would people want to read a book on CD-ROM ? ... My answer is, "I don’t know -- I prefer books, myself." So why did I do a CD-ROM? Two reasons: The first is exploratory, the second pedagogic. The first reason is that I feel a strong obligation to try to produce, use, and reflect upon all new technologies. ... But the second reason is more interesting. There are many things one can do with a CD-ROM book that are impossible with a regular book. For example, little demos, video asides, and active interaction.

CONT

A CD book is a computerized version of a paper book. It has a cover, you open it, turn the pages, go back and forward and at the end has a back cover. Unlike a regular book though, it can contain links. A link lets you jump right to the topic page that you are looking for, such as a chapter page or subject page. This type of book can also play music or other sounds while you read. A neat feature is that a CD book can also contain videos, something a paper book could never do. If you find an interesting topic or page, you can also send this subject to your printer and have a hard copy for reference(like having an instant copy machine).

CONT

Glaze and rime ice are names given to the ice that forms on an airplane’s windshield, its propeller and other aerodynamic surfaces as an airplane flies through supercooled rain droplets.

CONT

The rain droplets fall through the cold layer and reach the ground as supercooled liquid (water droplets at a temperature below 0°C), or, as a mixture of liquid and ice. As they land on cold objects such as tree branches, hydro lines, etc. the supercooled rain droplets spread out and freeze almost immediately, forming a smooth thin layer of ice ...

CONT

So supercooled raindrops stay liquid until they hit something hard, when they turn into a dangerous and beautiful layer of clear ice, covering roads, wires, trees, and buildings.
