HALIFAX class frigates carry a formidable array of weapons and sensor systems including 8 Harpoon long-range, surface-to-surface missiles, 16 Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles, a Bofors 57mm rapid-fire gun, a 20mm Phalanx anti-missile close-in-weapons-system(CIWS), 8 x 12. 7mm machine guns and 24 anti-submarine homing torpedoes. In addition, the ships can defend themselves using infra-red suppression, Shield decoys, chaff, flares, a towed acoustic decoy, and radar and sonar jamming devices. The ship's torpedo-carrying helicopter significantly extends its range of operational effectiveness.

[Halifax-class ships] make extensive use of Canadian-designed computer technology for integrated propulsion and machinery control, communications and combat systems. Each ship is equipped to operate with one Sea King helicopter. KNEEl JUMP. In this event, the contestant sits on the floor at a given line and must have his/her feet flat on the floor with the bottoms up. From this position, he/she then jumps as far forward as possible, lands on his/her feet, and maintains balance. The contestant is allowed to swing his/her arms back and forth to gain momentum for the leap forward. The practicality of this event comes from the quickness and balance one has to have while being on the moving ice during break up.

Ten traditional athletic events are now included in these competitions, among them, cross-country running with a pole, lasso and harpoon throwing, traditional triple jump, open-air snow wrestling, kneeling jump, Yup’ik high-kick, and others. There are events for all ages and both sexes.

From its close orbit above the tiny nucleus, Rosetta will be able to send back the most detailed images and information ever obtained of a comet. When a suitable landing site has been chosen, about a month after global mapping starts, the orbiter will release a 100 kg lander onto the comet's solid surface. Touchdown must be quite slow-less than one metre per second-to allow for the almost negligible gravitational pull of the tiny nucleus. In order to ensure that the lander does not bounce and disappear into space, an anchoring harpoon will be fired into the surface immediately on impact.

Penetrators as tools for exploring extraterrestrial solid surfaces have been developed for a couple of space missions to Mars, the Moon, comets, and the icy satellites of the giant planets. They are particularly useful to characterize the strength properties and the layering of planetary nearsurface layers.
