A vertical or near vertical steel plate forming a screw down which coal flows from an upper level or seam to a lower haulage road. Spiral chutes, built into large steel pipes, are used widely in staple shafts in horizon mining. They are kept filled with coal and therefore, breakage is reduced considerably.
