Treatment walls are structures installed underground to treat contaminated ground water found at hazardous waste sites. Treatment walls... are put in place by constructing a giant trench across the flow path of contaminated ground water and filling it with one of a variety of materials(reactive fillings) carefully selected for the ability to clean up specific types of contaminants. Leaks... fall into two basic types : internal leakage [such] as a thin oil film is built into the working parts of a hydraulic system. This lubricates the mating surfaces of valve spools, cylinder pistons, and other moving parts. Oil is not lost through this normal internal leakage since it eventually returns to the system reservoir. However, too much internal leakage will slow the operation of the system and waste power through the generation of heat. In some cases, it may cause cylinders to creep or drift. Or it may cause loss of oil control in the valves.... External oil leaks not only look bad-they can be expensive and hazardous.... A small leak can also be the signal for a hydraulic rupture that may injure a person while putting the machine out of operation.... Every joint in a hydraulic circuit is a potential point of leakage. This is why the number of connections in a system is kept at a minimum. Components can leak, but care in assembly and use of new seals and gaskets during overhaul will help to reduce this problem. 2, record 46, English, - leak

2, record 46, French, - fuite

There are 20 known types of physical treatment processes... The most common... are sedimentation, filtration, flocculation, and solar evaporation. Physical treatments may be separated into two categories : phase separation and component separation processes... Phase separation processes are employed to reduce waste volume and to concentrate the hazardous waste into one phase before further treatment and material recovery are performed.(Theodore, L. et Reynolds, J. The selection of an appropriate repository will depend primarily on local geological, hydrological, topographic and climatic conditions at the site. In general above-ground structures will be preferred where there is groundwater close to the earth surface or where excavation of pits or trenches would be difficult owing to hard bedrock close to the surface. On the other hand, in terrains with favourable properties, preference should be given to subsurface modules because of better shielding, easier handling during emplacement, simpler backfilling and covering with earth materials, and reduced potential for erosion. 5, record 77, English, - repository

Basic system operation and performance allow for the processing of contaminated JP-5 fuel that consists of any combination of particulates, water, and aviation fuel. Contaminated fuel is loaded into the process tank via a defueler truck used to collect the segregated JP-5 from squadron hazardous waste storage sites. The fuel is circulated at 15 gpm through the system until it is determined to be visually clean via a sampling port. A gravity drain valve allows for the discharge of wastewater stripped from the fuel during circulation. Depending on the level of particulate contamination, the fuel may be considered clean(less than 2mg/1 particulates, less than 5ppm free water) after one pass through the system or several. A sample of the fuel is then sent to the laboratory for further testing, especially with respect to the flash point. The system can only remove water and particulates. 3, record 83, English, - fuel%20reclaimer
