[An instrument] used to make direct measurements of visual range in the atmosphere or of the physical characteristics of the atmosphere that determine the visual range.

CONT

Visibility meters may be classified according to the quantities that they measure. Telephotometers and transmissometers measure the transmissivity or, alternatively, the extinction coefficient of the atmosphere. Nephelometers measure the scattering function of the particles suspended in the atmosphere. A third category of visibility meters makes use of an artificial "haze" of variable density that is used to obscure a marker at a fixed distance from the visibility meter.

A measure of the soiling properties of suspended particles in air determined by drawing a measured volume of air through a known area of Whatman number four filter paper for a measured period of time, expressed as a Coefficient of Haze(COH)/1000 linear feet, or equivalent.

soiling: The visible damage to materials by deposition of air pollutants. Soiling may be used as an index for collector efficiency by relating the quantities of gas before and after passage through a separator which are necessary to produce equal soiling of a standard filter paper.

Indirect measurements of particulate matter have historically been made using two methodologies : the British Smoke Shade(BSS) sampler and the AISI sampler, which measures Coefficient of Haze(CoH). Both the BSS and the CoH techniques are based on optical properties of particles and are most sensitive to the sooty components of PM that fall in the size range of approximately-3. 5-4. 5 µm in diameter.

On a par le passé effectué des mesures indirectes des matières particulaires en utilisant deux méthodes : les échantillonneurs British Smoke Shade (BSS) et AISI, qui mesurent le coefficient de transmission (CoH). Ces deux méthodes sont basées sur les propriétés optiques des particules et sont extrêmement sensibles aux éléments fuligineux des matières particulaires qui se situent dans une gamme de tailles d'environ - 3,5-4,5 µm de diamètre.

A measure of light absorption by particles, defined as that quantity of light scattering solids producing an optical density of 0.1.

coefficient of haze(COH)(in atmospheric chemistry) : One technique of measurement of the amount of filterable particulate matter suspended in air which has been used in the past depends upon drawing a measured sample of air(usually 1 000 linear feet) through a paper or membrane filter. A measurement is made of the intensity of light transmitted through the dust spot formed relative to that transmitted through an identical clean filter. The dirtiness of the air is reported in terms of the COH unit. This relates to the quantity of particulate material which produces an optical density, lg(I 0/I) of 0. 01 when measured by light transmission at 400 nm and relative to the transmission of an identical dust-free filter taken as 100%. Thus a filter which transmitted 50% relative to the clean filter has an absorbance of 0. 301 or 30. 1 COH units. This is not a recommended measure of filterable particulate matter since the size, colour and other properties of the aerosol and the air in which it is suspended affect the results. An arbitrary function of the concentration of one or more pollutants that is taken as a measure of the severity of pollution. For example, the following index has been used in the USA : 10 times the SO2 concentration plus de CO concentration(both in ppm by volume) plus twice the coefficient of haze. It was considered to be a cause for alarm when the value of this index rose from its average of about 12 to 50 or more. Several such indices are used, but none has more than local use, nor has any been found fully satisfactory.

Des chercheurs ont tenté de définir des «indices de pollution» qui sont en général des combinaisons linéaires des concentrations des principaux polluants affectées de coefficients numériques choisis de telle sorte que les différents polluants soient pondérés les uns par rapport aux autres.

Ne pas confondre l'indice de pollution de l'air avec l'indice de la qualité de l'air; ce dernier désigne le niveau d'un polluant donné qu'on juge dangereux pour la santé.

Filter Sampling. Particulates are extremely varied for their composition. The monitoring of particulates with High Volume(Hi-Vol) samplers and other filter media varies from a simple colorimetric measure of the coefficient of haze(CoH) to the use of neutron activation analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, etc. for metal concentrations and gas chromatography for organic composition. Heavy metal measurements for lead, cadmium, chromium, vanadium, and nickel are common in urban areas such as with the National Air Pollution Surveillance Network(NAPS).
