HAZINESS [5 records]

Record 1 2021-04-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Glassware
  • Ornamental Glassware
  • Restoration of Works of Art (Museums and Heritage)
DEF

Deterioration in which tiny cracks and hairline fractures form in a glass object due to a chemical instability inherent in the glass itself.

CONT

Crizzling can be categorized into several phases or stages. Initially the glass looks cloudy or hazy... but the haziness will not wash off. The glass may also exhibit little white dots or even crystals on the surface if the humidity is under 45%. As soon as the humidity goes up into the upper 50s, all the dots or crystals become liquid, and sometimes the entire surface can be wet or "weeping"...

Key term(s)
  • crizzeling
  • crizzelling
  • crissling

French

Domaine(s)
  • Objets en verre
  • Verrerie d'art
  • Restauration d'œuvres d'art (Muséologie et Patrimoine)
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Winemaking
  • Food Additives
DEF

A substance used to clarify liquids by precipitation.

CONT

This is an old world technique still widely used to clarify or refine wine. A fining agent, such as egg white or clay is added which absorbs or coagulates with microscopic constituents of concern such as proteins that may cause haziness or excess tannins that may cause bitterness. The combined substances settle to the bottom of the tank or barrel and the wine is removed from them weeks later.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Industrie vinicole
  • Additifs alimentaires
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plastics Manufacturing
  • Packaging in Plastic
DEF

A transparent plastic material having an abnormally cloudy or foggy appearance.

CONT

[For packaging films] "see-through" clarity, haze, and gloss are usually more relevant because of the influence of these properties on visibility of the contents and on the "sparkle" of the film.

Key term(s)
  • haziness
  • turbidity

French

Domaine(s)
  • Plasturgie
  • Emballages en matières plastiques

Record 4 1992-09-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radiography (Medicine)
  • Musculoskeletal System
DEF

The appearance seen in fibrous dysplasia in which relatively radiolucent or radiopaque areas appreciated on roentgenograms reflect the relative amounts of fibrous and osseous tissue. Trabeculae of woven bone are haphazardly embedded within a largely fibrous collagenous matrix and contribute to the overall generalized haziness of the lesion. Conversely, predominantly fibrous zones appear more radiolucent. [From REBON, 1988, p. 4069. ]

French

Domaine(s)
  • Radiographie (Médecine)
  • Appareil locomoteur (Médecine)
CONT
