English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
Universal entry(ies)
DEF

A chemical compound having the formula HBr which appears under the form of a colorless, nonflammable gas, is soluble in water and alcohol, is derived by passing hydrogen with bromine vapor over warm platinum sponge that acts as a catalyst or as a by-product in the bromination of organic compounds, and is used in organic synthesis, to make bromides by direct reaction with alcohols, as a pharmaceutical intermediate, an alkylation and oxidation catalyst, and a reducing agent.

OBS

Do not confuse with hydrobromic acid (q.v.), which is prepared by dissolving gaseous hydrogen bromide with sulfuric acid.

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
CONT

With the halogens, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine, hydrogen forms hydrides containing 1 atom of hydrogen per atom of halogen. These compounds are usually referred to as hydrogen halides, for example, hydrogen chloride, HCl, or as hydrohalic acids, for example hydrochloric acid. The hydrogen halides are gases at room temperature.

CONT

Electrochemical conversion of anhydrous hydrogen halide to halogen gas using an ionically conducting membrane.

CONT

hydrohalic acid: An aqueous solution of a hydrogen halide.

CONT

Reactions of alkenes and alkynes(at the double bond site). A. Addition of halides(chlorine, bromine, iodine)--yields dihalogen substituted alkane. B. Addition of hydrogen halides(HCl, HBr, HI)--yields monohalogen alkanes CH3CH2-Cl.

Then, the Encoding and Switching Unit(ESU) receives data from three different sources : the Tape Recorders and the HSM both at 50 Mbit/s, and the ASAR in High Bit Rate(HBR) mode at 100 Mbit/s. The ESU's architecture provides the flexibility to route the input data from any of these sources to any of the three Ka-band modulator interfaces.
