It has been suspected for some time that a substance secreted in the urine of pregnant women, something called human chorionic gonadotropin(hCG), suppresses Kaposi's sarcoma. Now a group of researchers from the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland reports that another urinary factor, which they call hCG-associated factor(HAF), is in fact responsible for this effect. 1, record 1, English, - hCG%2Dassociated%20factor

Robert Gallo (Institute of Human Virology, Baltimore, USA) a développé deux aspects de ses recherches en cours, les chimiokines et un facteur associé à l'hormone hCG [gonadotrophine chorionique humaine] [...] R. Gallo a communiqué ses derniers résultats avec ce qu'il appelle un «facteur associé à hCG» (HAF), une hormone produite par les femmes durant la grossesse et isolée à partir de l'urine. L'action de HAF contre le sarcome de Kaposi a déjà été publiée par son équipe. HAF démontre également, selon R. Gallo, un effet inhibiteur contre le virus. Il supprime la réplication du SIV [simian immunodeficiency virus] chez le singe et inhibe l'effet pathogène du VIH dans un modèle de souris transgénique.
