CONT

Karmen reported a hydrogen flame ionization detector sensitive only to compounds containing phosphorus, bromine, chlorine, and iodine. He noted that halogens or phosphorus increased the electrical conductivity of the flame in the presence of a wire, ceramic, or glass probe containing a sodium compound.

PHR

Glass probe.

CONT

A number of devices are available to assay Contact Handled-Transuranic(CH-TRU) for fissile material. One assay technique employs a pulsed fast-neutron source of 108 neutron/second to provide interrogation neutrons that upon thermalization produce fissions in any fissile material. The fission neutrons, counted using3sup>He detector packs, are separated from the interrogation neutrons by their longer die-away time.

CONT

A cadmium sleeve on the outside of the detector reduces the background rate from low-energy neutrons in the room. A cadmium sleeve in the detector well removes thermal neutrons from the interrogation flux and improves the shielding between the³sup>He detectors and the AmLi source …

DEF

Kaye adapted a Beckman far-ultraviolet DK-2 spectrophotometer as a gas chromatographic effluent detector to record the spectra of eluted, absorbing materials. Using heated flow-through cells... coupled directly to the thermal conductivity cell' s outlet, he found that absorptivities of most organic vapors were sufficiently large to permit quantitative analysis, and in some instances identification, where specific absorption patterns could be attributed directly to a functional group in certain molecular species. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the far-ultraviolet detector for many compounds possessing intense absorption bands exceeds that of the normal thermal conductivity detector and, in some cases, the hydrogen flame ionization detector.

Recently, Behrendt noted that the high resolution afforded by open tubular columns is often of no help in analysis since the samples handled are too small to permit further examination of separated components. To circumvent this disadvantage, he developed an infrared microspectrometer using a molecular beam detector to monitor chromatographic open-tube effluents.
