Another problem involving the use of words is the question of "conditional assault". If one person points a gun at another and says, "Your money or your life!", it might be argued that it is not assault because the plaintiff may avoid any harm by complying with the condition and parting with his money. It could be contended that the requirement of immediacy is absent. Such an argument is fallacious, however, for one cannot impose conditions upon another, when one has no legal right to do so. It would be otherwise of a landowner said to a trespasser, "Get off my land or I’ll throw you off," for in such a case, the landowner is only threatening to do what he is entitled to do anyway.

CONT

The head of a shipping company for whom we designed training systems called requesting help. After discussing his situation, I suggested that he didn’t need new training systems and that the apprenticeship approach to training would work for him. On a boat, novice sailors have the time to ask questions and look over more experienced seamen's shoulders. Because of the close quarters and cultures of learning on a ship, it's easy to learn from the experts. And there are plenty of mechanisms in place to ensure that a neophyte's mistake doesn’t blow up the ship. Classroom training, or even e-learning, would have been an expensive and less-effective solution to this company's problem.

B.E.T. method: Gaseous absorption analysis method. Acronym of "S. Brunauer, P. Emmett, E. Teller." Widely used for surface area determinations by computing the monolayer area.

OBS

The BET method is widely used in surface science for the calculation of surface areas of solids by physical adsorption of gas molecules.

OBS

Surface Area Measurement. For nanopowder, the B.E.T. method is commonly used to determine the specific surface area. The drop in nitrogen pressure in a closed container due to adsorption of the nitrogen molecules to the surface of the material inserted in the container is measured. (The shape of the nanopowder particles is assumed to be spherical.)

OBS

... There, he [Paul Emmett] sought out a better understanding of the mechanisms by which ammonia could be taken out of the air and turned into a fertilizer for plants. Emmett knew that the Germans had developed just such a mechanism during World War I, but scientists did not entirely understand how and why the process worked. The result of this investigation was the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) Method, which remains the second-most cited scientific paper on the process and a technique still in use worldwide. The BET Method provides scientists with the ability to measure a variety of properties of gas molecules on a solid surface : the surface area, the composition of the surface, and the amount of catalyst that is both on the surface and in the interior of the solid. Dr. Emmett's work on the BET Method earned him a Nobel Prize nomination.

St. Stephen's Day in Hungary is observed on August 20, the day on which the allegedly sacred relics of Stephen I of Hungary were transferred to the city of Buda. This day is the ultimate public holiday in Hungary. Stephen I, or "Stephanus" as he was named in Latin by Pope Sylvester II, was originally a pagan chieftain's son answering to the name "Vajk". He gouged out the eyes and poured boiling lead into the ears of his arch rival(Vasoly) and was awarded a crown by the pope for forcing catholicism onto the Hungarian people. The converted king was canonized by Pope Gregory VII in AD 1083 and has since been referred to as St Stephen of Hungary. Under communism St. Stephen's Day was referred to by the Hungarians as "The celebration of the new bread-the end of the harvest".

A smothered verb is a verb converted to a noun, so it needs a helping verb and prepositions or articles to express action. This lengthens a sentence and saps its vitality. It also encourages use of the passive voice. "We are in agreement with the decision." In this sentence, the writer has smothered the main verb (agree) with a noun (agreement). The noun now requires a helping verb (are) and a preposition (in) to show action.

CONT

Who Was That Masked Verb? An easy way to make your writing more brief is to unmask verbs. A masked(or smothered) verb kills your sentence with word overload or by unnecessarily combining nouns and verbs. So instead of writing, "The report is saying everything is fine, "write, "The report says everything is fine. "You’ve strengthened the verb by taking out "is, "a static word that does little to move the reader forward. Other examples :"The committee made the decision to adjourn" vs. "The committee decided to adjourn"; "I came to the conclusion he was right" vs. "I concluded he was right. "

The other, and the one to which I incline, is that the name originated with the London ’Daily Mail' Rugby writer, J A Buttery, who in a paper-back issued after the tour, ’Why the All Blacks Triumphed’; said that he began referring to the team as All Blacks because of the colour of their uniform.

Superfluid Helium What Is It? As the temperature of helium gas is lowered to approximately 5. 2°K, a phase transition to ordinary liquid helium(He I) takes place. The latter is unremarkable and its behavior is identical to any other liquid. As temperature is lowered further(at moderate pressures) helium does not solidify. Rather, it undergoes a phase change to a second liquid phase He II at temperature of about 2. 17°K.... the He II phase persists all the way to absolute zero.... The He II phase is referred to as superfluid helium because of its remarkable properties, including the ability to flow through microscopic passages [holes as small as 10-7 centimeters in diameter] with no apparent friction; the quantization of vortices; and the ability to support four wave modes : first sound which is analogous to sound in ordinary gases and liquids, second sound which carries temperature and entropy perturbations with virtually no pressure variations, third sound which are waves on thin films, and fourth sound which are acoustic-like waves in the "superfluid" component of He II.

Mandelbrot began by iterating a simple algebraic expression on a computer. This sent him on a voyage into the infinite two-dimensional sheet of numbers called the complex plane. The particular set of complex numbers Mandelbrot explored in this plane has since come to be named the "Mandelbrot set" and dubbed "the most complex object in mathematics. "Mandelbrot remains enthusiastic about what he found. "This set is an astonishing combination of utter simplicity and mind-boggling complication. At first sight it is a ’molecule’ made of bonded ’atoms’, one shape like a cardioid and the other nearly circular. But a closer look discloses an infinity of smaller molecules shaped like the big one, and linked by what I proposed to call a ’devil' s polymer’. "

DEF

John Langshaw Austin(...) It was his conviction that careful and thorough investigation of "ordinary"-i. e. non-philosophical-linguistic usage was essential to philosophy as well as fruitful in itself. Using this technique in How to do Things with Words he described "performative" utterances, such as "I promise" which, apparently a statement, is in fact an act or performance, and an example of an utterance having "illocutionary" forces.
