A Soltau Model RVS 250-AS-STS microtunneling machine with a slurry spoil removal system was selected on a lease arrangement to install the 24-in. sewer line. A mixed face cutting head configuration was selected in anticipation of the varying ground conditions. The unit is supplied with high pressure water jets which have proven effective in boring through dense clays. The RVS 250-AS-STS involves two new innovations. First, it utilizes a state-of-the-art laser guidance system coupled with a completely digital operator control panel with continuous, up-to-date information on the tunneling process. A PAPR, powered air purifying respirator, is a positive air system that uses a battery to power a blower, which then pumps air through a filter into a mask or a hood. The blower, battery and filters are usually belt-worn, and connected to the hood or mask by a breathing tube. The clean, filtered, cool air flows into the breathing zone. The airflow is much higher than the wearer needs to breathe, and the excess flow creates a positive pressure as it passes through the mask. This pressure pushes out, and keeps contamination from leaking in. This is different from a normal gas mask, which uses the wearer’s lung power to pull air through a filter. There are three types of respiratory protection: air-purifying respirators ["filtrants," "à purification d’air" or "à épuration d’air"], supplied-air respirators ["à adduction d’air"] and self-contained breathing apparatus ["autonome"]. Air-purifying respirators clean contaminated air before it is inhaled by passing the air through a cleansing media such as a mechanical filter, cartridge or filter/cartridge combination. The air is passed through the cleansing media by breathing or by a blower. These latter are called powered air-purifying respirators. 7, record 40, English, - powered%20air%2Dpurifying%20respirator

A heavy, crawler-tracked, 200-horsepower cutter loader designed for longwall faces in seams over 4½ feed thick, and takes a buttock 5 feet wide. The maximum cutting head is 7½ feet.... The cutterhead consists of seven cutter chains mounted side by side and can be moved up and down radially to cut the coal from roof to floor. It delivers the coal onto the face conveyor by a short cross conveyor. Capacity is over 400 tons per machine and over 4 tons output per man per shift. 2, record 57, English, - Dosco%20miner

Visual awareness primarily involves seeing what is directly in front of you, but it can be influenced by a three-dimensional representation of the object in view retained by the brain. If you see the back of a person's head, the brain infers that there is a face on the front of it. We know this is true because we would be very startled if a mirror revealed that the front was exactly like the back. 1, record 60, English, - visual%20awareness

Brief flashes of colored light enable researchers to infer the minimum time required for visual awareness. A disk of red light is projected for 20 milliseconds, followed immediately by a 20- millisecond flash of green light. But the observer reports seeing a single flash of yellow, the color that would be apparent if red and green were projected simultaneously. The subject does not become aware of red followed by green until the length of the flashes is extended to 60 to 70 milliseconds. 1, record 60, English, - visual%20awareness

1, record 60, French, - perception%20visuelle%20consciente

Joy presently offer both chain ripper miners and the rotary drum head-type miners introduced in 1968. However, the rotary drum head machines are proving to be the more popular and look to be superseding the chain ripper models produced by Joy. In operation the chain ripper machine works as follows. The machine is trammed forward into position then, while the main chassis of the machine remains stationary, the cutting head moves forward, sumping into the coal at the bottom of the face. The rotation of the chains carries the broken coal back over the head and deposits it on to the chain conveyor which then moves the coal to the rear end of the machine. When the sumping operation is complete, the head travels upwards towards the top of the seam, breaking out the coal as it moves.
