In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered. 2, record 1, English, - after%20capstan

Stem elongation or jointing occurs as a result of internode elongation. Usually a plant has about five to six leaves on the main shoot when internode elongation first begins. Throughout development, the lower four nodes remain in the crown. The fifth node may remain in the crown or be elevated slightly and nodes six and seven are generally elevated above the soil. The elongating internode is hollow between the crown and the elevated growing point, except in solid stem varieties. Rapid stem or internode elongation brings the developing head above the soil surface. Each elongating internode becomes progressively longer and eventually leads to head emergence. 4, record 14, English, - shooting%20stage

... what makes some extratropical cyclones produce catastrophically damaging winds.... [Keith Browning and Pete Clark] have identified a mesoscale flow which they call the Sting Jet. It originates in the cloud head of a rapidly deepening cyclone and gathers speed as it descends towards the tip of the cloud head when it begins to hook around the cyclone centre... The Sting Jet was first identified observationally from a reanalysis of the Great Storm of October 1987 where the damaging winds were shown to be emanating from the evaporating tip of the hooked cloud head. It has since been reproduced in high-resolution runs with the mesoscale version of the Unified Model. The Sting Jet is distinct from the usual strong-wind region associated with the warm conveyor belt and main cold front. There are indications that conditional symmetric instability and evaporation both play a role in its formation but the importance of these processes remains to be quantified. 4, record 16, English, - sting%20jet

2, record 22, French, - Programme%20d%27aide%20pr%C3%A9scolaire%20aux%20Premi%C3%A8res%20nations%20%2D%20Guide%20des%20normes

A Soltau Model RVS 250-AS-STS microtunneling machine with a slurry spoil removal system was selected on a lease arrangement to install the 24-in. sewer line. A mixed face cutting head configuration was selected in anticipation of the varying ground conditions. The unit is supplied with high pressure water jets which have proven effective in boring through dense clays. The RVS 250-AS-STS involves two new innovations. First, it utilizes a state-of-the-art laser guidance system coupled with a completely digital operator control panel with continuous, up-to-date information on the tunneling process. A data logger, which can record data at specific time intervals or length of pipe jacked, also provides for a permanent record of the operation. 1, record 25, English, - microtunneling%20machine

Catch phase : after lower body has fully extended and bar reaches near maximal height, pull body under bar and rotate arms around and under bar. Simultaneously, hips and knees flex into a quarter squat position. Once arms are under bar, lift elbows to position the upper arms parallel to floor. Rack the bar across front of clavicles(collar bones) and anterior deltoids(front shoulder muscles).... Stand up by extending hips and knees to a fully erect position. In the past resident ambassadors were called "ordinary" and ambassadors sent on special missions were "extraordinary". Later the distinction was abolished so that today all ambassadors are "extraordinary". "Plenipotentiary" was added to the title to denote that he has full powers to conduct normal diplomatic operations, but to negotiate and sign a treaty he needs special full powers. 1, record 56, English, - ambassador%20extraordinary%20and%20plenipotentiary

ISAS utilizes "aerodynamic lifting bodies" to conduct space research and observations, and is developing launch vehicles and satellites for such purposes. In its former guise as part of Tokyo University Institute of Industrial Science in 1955, the organization conducted the horizontal flight tests of pencil rockets, and as Tokyo University Aerospace Research Center, it launched Japan's first artificial satellite, Ohsumi, in 1970. These entities disappeared in 1981 in a "progressive amalgamation" under the direct control of the Ministry of Education. The head office of ISAS is at Sagamigahara in Kanagawa Prefecture, and the test range is at Uchinoura in Kagoshima Prefecture. 3, record 58, English, - Institute%20of%20space%20%26%20astronautical%20Science

The combination of oscillation and slope of the sieve causes the stock to travel slowly along its length. Air currents drawn from the underside of the sieve float the lighter branny particles to the surface of the layer of material on the sieve. Heavier particles of endosperm fall to the lowest strata of material and ride on the surface of the sieve until they reach the part of the sieve that has openings big enough for the particles to fall through. As the particles fall through, they are collected in a series of graded fractions. Thus, at the head end of the purifier, the purest most dense particles of endosperm pass first through the mesh as mixture travels along the sieve, the composite particles of endosperm with adhering bran are next to pass through the mesh, and finally the light coarse branny particles tail over the sieve into separation collecting spouts. 1, record 59, English, - collecting%20spouts

1, record 59, French, - collecteurs

Under the attentat clause, it is not political offense to murder or to make an attempt at the life of the head of a state, or a member of his family, or sometimes, a member of the government. 2, record 69, French, - Gramophone%20virtuel%20%3A%20enregistrements%20historiques%20canadiens

The [intermittent extrusion] process has three subcategories : the reciprocating screw method, the ram accumulator method, and the accumulator head method.... The ram accumulator method, which is no longer in widespread use, is intended for heavy parts weighing 2 kg or more. Much like the reciprocating screw, the system is used to quickly extrude heavy parisons that might sag or draw down from gravity. The accumulator is a reservoir mounted alongside the extruder. A piston or plunger pushes the melt through the extrusion head. Unlike the reciprocating screw, melt that enters the reservoir first is the last to leave. 1, record 75, English, - ram%20accumulator%20method

The [intermittent extrusion] process has three subcategories : the reciprocating screw method, the ram accumulator method, and the accumulator head method.... The accumulator head method has replaced the ram accumulator in its applicability for heavy parts. The reservoir, tubular in shape, is a part of the extrusion head itself. Plastic melt that enters the head first is also first to leave. A tubular plunger quickly extrudes the melt from the head annulus with a low uniform pressure, which helps to reduce the stresses found in other systems. 1, record 76, English, - accumulator%20head%20method

1, record 84, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20Sovent

Heightened expectations will be difficult to meet, but they have been sustained by recent accomplishments : in the last few days of 1991, the Secretary General helped work out a negotiated solution to twelve years of insurgency in El Salvador; in earlier weeks, one of his representatives obtained the release of Western hostages held in Lebanon for several years; in January 1992, another UN diplomat secured a fragile ceasefire in the Yugoslav civil war and the UN Security Council held its first ever meeting at the Head of State or Government level; and now the UN is deploying some of the largest peacekeeping contingents ever in Yugoslavia and Cambodia. 1, record 87, English, - peacekeeping%20contingent

The pilot's eye position locator is a two-way sighting device mounted below the compass on the windshield center post. It is used to locate the pilot's eyes in the design eye position for optimum runway visibility and an unobstructed view of the instrument panels. The design eye position is attained in two stages. The captain or first officer centers himself in his seat in a comfortably slumped position. Other life-science experiments use crew members as experimental subjects. One is a NASA "Autogenic Feedback" experiment, designed to investigate the extent to which prior training can help astronauts to use voluntary control to reduce the effects of space sickness. Discomfort and nausea can have serious effects on crew members’ effectiveness, especially during the first two days of a mission. Statistically, it seems to affect about 50 per cent of people selected for spaceflight. Three of the Spacelab 3 crew received pre-flight training in recognising and controlling the symptoms; a control group of two did not. All wear electrodes to record such parameters as heart and respiration rate, sweating, etc., plus accelerometers to monitor head and body movements : these seem to have a relationship to space sickness. 1, record 96, English, - autogenic%20feedback%20experiment
