The portion of a respiratory protection device that is worn over the head.

The headpiece is in two typical forms :[1) ] tight-fitting, in which there is a seal directly on the face in the style of a typical air-purifying filter [or 2) ] loose-fitting, in which there is no seal directly to the face. Various styles may cover the entire head or just the front portion; there may be an elastic or other means to keep the headpiece conforming approximately to the face; there may be a hood form so that the head covering continues to or below the neck and some forms are integral with a protective clothing ensemble. There may or may not be outlet valves or other air direction devices.
