Description : Body ovate, strongly laterally compressed. Head relatively small, upper margin of head with a distinct notch above eye, i. e. dorsal profile of head concave; mouth small, terminating in front of eyes, lower jaw projecting; teeth small, conical, in a single series in each jaw; eyes moderately large.

The yellowtail is a valued food fish; it is usually filleted and may be sold fresh but is commonly frozen and exported.

Caractères distinctifs : La Limande à queue jaune a une petite bouche qui la distingue de tous les Poissons plats, sauf de la Plie rouge, de la Plie lisse, et de la Plie grise. Elle se distingue d'emblée de ces dernières à sa ligne latérale arquée; la ligne latérale des trois autres espèces est droite.

Sur le marché actuel les trois espèces suivantes : plie canadienne, plie rouge et limande à queue jaune, sont confondues dans un même ensemble dont généralement plus de 90% est constitué de plie canadienne. En conséquence, il est recommandé d'utiliser la dénomination plie canadienne pour cet ensemble. Il pourrait être avantageux, par la suite, d'en promouvoir la commercialisation séparée, auquel cas on devra utiliser chaque terme normalisé.
