ESA, the European Space Agency, provides a vision of Europe’s future in space, and of the benefits for people on the ground that satellites can supply. It also develops the strategies needed to fulfill the vision, through collaborative projects in space science and technology.

The European Space Agency was formed from the union of ESRO(European Space Research Organization) and ELDO(European Launcher Development Organization) in 1975. The head office is in Paris. Created through European cooperation, each member country donates funds to each project. As yet there has been no independent ESA manned mission, but the agency uses the US Space Shuttle to conduct experiments in space, and is developing an orbital laboratory for the International Space Station.

Originally, some controversy centred around the classification of diplomatic representatives, particularly as regards matters of precedence and relative status. The attribution of the title of Ambassador, as distinct from Minister, to the head of a diplomatic mission depends on various factors, including the rank of the States concerned. Sometimes an embassy is a matter of tradition, as for example between France and Switzerland. Usually, however, now, the population and importance of the country of mission are the determining factor. There are none the less many cases of anomalies in the allocation of embassies, which reflect a lack of uniformity of practice.

The only other formal communication used is the aide-mémoire or memorandum, which is a written statement handed in the course of a personal discussion with the object of recording, for the convenience of the other party, the details of a possibly complicated or involved matter.

It [aide memoire] is supposed, as its name implies, to serve as a reminder of points covered in the conversation. In practice it is left by the diplomatic officer with the Foreign Office or with the other mission. It does not begin with the usual phrases of courtesy of the note verbale, but its first lines should identify the sender of the note and the receiver. It is initialed by the sender.

The Head of Mission personally requests the accrediting country's agrément or acceptance by submitting the candidate's biography on a sheet of plain white paper. Upon receipt of the agrément or acceptance, the Head of Mission conveys the response to the Department, who distributes it as required. When this has been obtained, and the appropriate Order in Council promulgated, the appointment is publicly announced by the Department.

Protocol relations between the accredited heads of diplomatic missions and the heads of extraordinary missions are, at times, more delicate to regulate. If a member of the government(Minister of Secretary of State) has unquestioned precedence over an ambassador, the question can become controversial when the head of an extraordinary mission has a hierarchical rank inferior to that of the head of mission at the post. In this case, the regular head of mission should inform the national authorities of the position he wishes the extraordinary envoy to be given.

The Glenn Research Center is a NASA center, located in Cleveland, Ohio between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the Rocky River Reservation(Part of the Cleveland Metroparks). Glenn is a NASA research center, whose primary mission is to develop science and technology for use in aeronautics and space. It was established in 1942 as part of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics(NACA) and was later incorporated into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) as a laboratory for aircraft engine research. It was initially named the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory after funding approval was given in June 1940. It was renamed the Flight Propulsion Research Laboratory in 1947, the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in 1948 and the NASA Lewis Research Center in 1958. On march 1, 1999, the Lewis Research Center was officially renamed the NASA John H. [The head of mission] request the Minister for Foreign Affairs to take the orders of the head of the state respecting an audience for the purpose of presenting his credentials, of which he must furnish a copy beforehand. This copy is known in London as the Working Copy. In French it is called copie figuree.(The older term copie d’usage was used in London until recently). This document need not be signed, but should be in the same language and wording as the original. It may be typed, photocopied, printed or handwritten, as convenient. A translation is of course useful, especially where the original is in a language not familiar in the receiving country, but it is not a substitute for the Working Copy.

The name for letters given to an ambassador by his chief of state, and addressed to the chief of state of his host country.

[The letters] are delivered to the latter by ambassadors in a formal credentials ceremony, which generally takes place shortly after his arrival at a new post. Until this ceremony has taken place he is not formally recognized by the host country, and he cannot officially act as ambassador. The letters are termed "letters of credence" because they request the receiving chief of state to give "full credence" to what the ambassador will say on behalf of his government.

A head of mission may be accredited to more than one state, so long as the receiving states concerned have been duly notified and have raised no objection. Such multiple accreditation has often been found convenient for geographical reasons, or because it has been desired to limit expenditure on diplomatic missions. Subject to the same proviso, a member of the diplomatic staff of a mission may be similarly assigned to more than one state.

Other life-science experiments use crew members as experimental subjects. One is a NASA "Autogenic Feedback" experiment, designed to investigate the extent to which prior training can help astronauts to use voluntary control to reduce the effects of space sickness. Discomfort and nausea can have serious effects on crew members’ effectiveness, especially during the first two days of a mission. Statistically, it seems to affect about 50 per cent of people selected for spaceflight. Three of the Spacelab 3 crew received pre-flight training in recognising and controlling the symptoms; a control group of two did not. All wear electrodes to record such parameters as heart and respiration rate, sweating, etc., plus accelerometers to monitor head and body movements : these seem to have a relationship to space sickness.
