Subject field(s)
  • Plastics Manufacturing
DEF

A moulding process in which catalysed resin is injected into a closed mould already containing the pre-formed reinforcement.

CONT

Resin transfer molding(RTM)... uses a closed mold, in two or more parts, usually made of glass-reinforced polymers or light metal alloys, with injection points and vents to allow air to escape. Reinforcement is cut to shape and placed in the mold, together with any inserts or fittings. The mold is closed and a low viscosity thermosetting resin(usually polyester) is injected under low pressure through a mixing head in which hardener is blended with the resin.

CONT

Resin transfer molding is increasingly used for large fiber-reinforced polymer components. Shapes can be complex. Ribs, bosses, and inserts are possible. Foam panels can be insert molded to reduce component weight.

OBS

If a vacuum is used in resin transfer molding, the term used is "vacuum assisted resin transfer molding" (VARTM).

OBS

RIM: The acronym RIM is often confused with Reaction Injection Molding ...

OBS

[According to one source]: resin transfer molding (RTM): the technically correct and most widely accepted name in the U.S; resin injection molding (RIM): a designation used in Europe.

DEF

Downy Mildew of Cabbage. Caused by the fungus Peronospora parasitica. Damage occurs mostly to young plants or to exposed leaves of heading plants.

CONT

The fungus causing downy mildew of cabbage also attacks other crucifers, such as cauliflower, collards, Chinese cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, and kohlrabi... The first symptoms of downy mildew are the formation of black specks and yellow-brown spots on the upper leaf surface, accompanied by the development of a fluffy mold growth on the lower surface. Young leaves may fall off when infected, and on older leaves, the spots may coalesce, producing large, sunken, tan spots. The disease can attack young seedlings or plants that have already headed. On older cabbage plants, the disease produces dark, sunken spots, which may appear purplish, on the head or wrapper leaves.

The [intermittent extrusion] process has three subcategories : the reciprocating screw method, the ram accumulator method, and the accumulator head method. The reciprocating screw method is normally used for bottles between 250 mL and 10 L in volume. After the parison is extruded, the screw moves backward, accumulating melt in front of its tip. When the previously molded bottle has cooled the mold opens, the bottle is removed and the screw quickly moves forward, pushing plastic melt through the extrusion head and thereby forming the next parison.

Another process somewhat related to extrusion blow molding is the extrusion/molded neck process. Still used today by Owens-Illinois, this is a proprietary process that traces its roots to glass-blowing technology. It is unique in that the bottle neck finish is injection molded and the bottle body is extrusion blow-molded. In this process, the two halves of a neck finish cavity or neckring are mounted to an actuating head assembly, which intermeshes with the two halves of the blow-mold cavity. The process cycle begins with the main body mold cavity open and the neckring cavity closed. The actuating head assembly moves downward to contact the extrusion die head. When it is in position, extrusion pressure fills the neck section with plastic melt. After it is held for one to two seconds, the head assembly moves upward while, simultaneously, the parison is extruded. When the head assembly reaches the top of its stroke, the blow-mold cavity closes on the parison. The remaining steps of parison pinch-off, blowing, and part removal all follow conventional techniques. Although the production cycle is somewhat slow, the process offers the quality advantage of an accurately molded neck and the process advantage of a parison held at both ends.

Intermittent extrusion is the second basic extrusion blow-molding category. In this process the parison is quickly extruded after the bottle is removed from the mold. The mold clamping mechanism does not need to transfer to a blowing station. Blow molding, cooling, and part removal all take place under the extrusion head, which also allows the clamping system to be more simple and rugged. The stop/start aspect of the extrusion method makes this process more suitable for polyolefin and other materials that are not heat-sensitive.

Shuttle continuous extrusion blow-molding machine. Molds on this dual-sided system alternately move to capture a parison.

OBS

The [continuous extrusion blow-molding] process has three subcategories : the rising mold method, the rotary method, and the shuttle method.... In the shuttle method a blowing station is located on one or both sides of the extruder. As the parison reaches the proper length, the blow mold and clamp quickly shuttle to a point under the extrusion head, capture and cut the parison, and return to the blowing station. With dual sided machines, the clamps shuttle on an alternating basis. For increased production output, multiple extrusion heads are used.

The primary difficulty with these methods is that the injection mold and blow-mold stations must stand idle while the finished parts are removed.
