The top notes(aka [also known as] opening notes, head notes) of a fragrance are those you first smell when you spray on a perfume These are the fragrances that give you the first impressions of the perfume... These notes are often the lightest of all notes and therefore fade away reasonably quickly... Although the top notes fade quickly as they are mostly designed to lure a customer in on their first smell, it is also important that the top notes easily blend into the heart notes for a smooth transition as the body of the perfume starts to appear.

Les notes de tête sont composées de matières très volatiles et légères. Elles n'ont pas une persistance dans le temps. ... in the case of exchanges of notes and similar informal agreements which are binding upon signature and do not require ratification, and in those instances when ratification of a treaty is dispensed with, the question whether the committed State is entitled to repudiate the treaty on the ground that its agent was unauthorised to sign, or exceeded his instructions, could arise. According to one theory only the Head of State is internationally competent to commit his country, and therefore every treaty signed by someone other than the Head of State is signed by a delegate who must conform to his instructions; if he exceeds these then the treaty may be repudiated.
