Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The cross-staff-This is a long-established instrument but is less precise than the optical square... it consists of a brass box, octagonal in shape, about 75 mm deep and 60 mm broad. Down the centre of each face is cut a slot which contains a fine wire strained vertically. The staff can be fitted on the end of a ranging pole and be erected vertically. More properly, it should be attached to a tripod so that it can be placed exactly over a point on the ground by using a plumb-bob from the head of the tripod. 3, record 2, English, - cross%2Dstaff

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 DEF
A paper defect characterized by unwanted folds or creases. 2, record 3, English, - gusseting
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Gusseting occurs because the inner pages of a folded, closed head signature cannot move independently of the adjacent pages to compensate for progressively varying centres and radii of curvature of backbone fold from the outside pages to the centre pages of the signature. As a result, the paper in the centre of the signature is forced forward at the backbone, but being restrained at the head, it assumes corrugations or waves, and in extreme cases, these waves fold over and become hard wrinkles. 3, record 3, English, - gusseting
