English

Subject field(s)
  • Surgical Instruments
  • Eye Surgery
CONT

Vitrectomy was scheduled after explaining the pros and cons of the procedure to the patient, who then agreed to undergo the procedure. The vitreous body was removed under retrobulbar anesthesia through a standard three-channel 23G [gauge] or 25G high-speed vitreous cutting head and optical fiber via pars plana of the ciliary body. Triamcinolone acetonide was injected into the vitreous cavity, the remaining posterior vitreous cortex was stained and removed. Using 23G or 25G intraocular forceps, the edge of ERM [epiretinal membrane] was clamped, and centripetal peeling was performed along the retina surface to minimize the risk of surgically induced MH [macular hole].

CONT

Some qualifying factors for acute rehabilitation to be needed are a medical condition that has significantly decreased a patient's faculties. Examples of a situation that cause a significant disturbance include, but are not limited to, stroke, spinal cord injury, head trauma or acquired brain injury, amputations, and burns. A patient who is at risk of medical instability will likely be admitted into acute rehab. Because it is located in the hospital, all resources are available on-site if an emergency were to occur.

Subject field(s)
  • Sports Equipment and Accessories
  • Skiing and Snowboarding
  • Protection of Life
DEF

A headgear usually insulated worn by a skier or a snowboarder that is used to protect the head in case of a fall.

CONT

Several studies have demonstrated that ski and snowboard helmets are effective at preventing head injuries. It is estimated that for every 10 people who wear a helmet, up to five may avoid head injuries. Studies also show that even at a speed of 19 km/h, a ski helmet can minimize brain damage. Evidence also demonstrates that ski and snowboards helmet use did not increase the risk of neck injury.

CONT

Experts recommend that skiers and snowboarders wear a ski helmet in order to reduce the risk of a head injury while skiing. Ski helmets help absorb the shock of an impact to the head, and reduce the jarring of the brain against the skull during impacts with the ski slope or other objects, such as trees or other skiers. The right helmet substantially reduces the risk of concussions and other serious head injuries.... When choosing a ski or snowboard helmet, look for a helmet that meets ski and snowboard helmet standards from the American Society of Testing and Materials(ASTM), European Committee for Standardization(CEN) or Snell. There should be a label or sticker on the inside of the helmet to designate such a standard.

DEF

CONT

Catterall attempted to improve the predictive value of early radiographic changes in Perthes disease by identifying four radiologic signs that indicated a capital femoral epiphysis at risk for collapse. These findings are(1) Gage's sign(a small, osteoporotic segment that forms a transradiant V on the lateral side of the epiphysis) ;(2) calcification lateral to the epiphysis;(3) lateral subluxation of the femoral head; and(4) a transverse epiphyseal line. Murphy and Marsh found that these four head at risk signs and a fifth, diffuse metaphyseal reaction, correlated better with a poor radiologic result than did the degree of epiphyseal involvement.
