CONT

Symptoms of covered smut of barley. The diseased plants head at about the same time as healthy plants. They are recognizable by their blackened ears that emerge from the leaf sheaths. All the ears in a diseased plant and all the grains in a diseased ear are attacked by the disease. All the grains in a diseased ear are transformed into masses of spores which are held in place by persistent, tough, greyish-white membrane.

  • Grain Growing
CONT

Plant diseases can affect grain quality. For example, wheat grain from rusted plants is usually thin and low in test weight and is therefore degraded on this account. When such wheat is milled, flour yield is poor. Smut diseases and root rots have similar effects on milling and baking quality.

CONT

Loose smut is a smut disease of grains in which the entire head is transformed into a dusty mass of spores.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Diseases
DEF

Diseased wheat stricken with bunt or stinking smut (caused by Tilletia caries and T. foetida) or with dwarf bunt (T. controversa).

OBS

The disease usually is carried over from one crop to the next as black spores on the seed or as smut balls mixed with the seed. The sumut spores germinate when bunt-infested seed is sown in moist cool soils. The fungus infects the young seedlings, grows within them, and produces smut balls completely filled with black spores instead of kernels in the wheat head. The spores have the odor of stale fish.

OBS

Blé atteint de la carie (maladie fongique).

OBS
