To maintain a stable perception of the world around us while we engage in normal movements throughout our day, such as walking, we have something known as the vestibulo-ocular reflex(VOR). This reflex keeps us steady and balanced even though our eyes and head are continuously moving when we perform most actions. When we make a head movement, our eye muscles are triggered instantly to create an eye movement opposite to that of our head movement at the exact same speed to readjust the visual world, which, in turn, stabilizes our retinal image by keeping the eye still in space and focused on an object, despite the head motion. 8, record 2, English, - vestibulo%2Docular%20reflex

Simpson’s Obstetrical Forceps ... Developed in 1848 by Dr. James Simpson of Edinburgh, these forceps were a combination of features from earlier models. He retained the finger rests and deep finger depressions in the handle and connected the forceps with a notched joint. 4, record 3, English, - Simpson%20forceps

James Young Simpson(1842) adapted the design of forceps to include a prominent pelvic curve with parallel shanks and an articulating lock. The space created with the divergence of the shanks allows for finger positioning and control of the molded head of the fetus. They have an elongated and flattened cephalic curve, which provides minimal trauma in traction, and are best suited to deliveries witout need of major rotation. 4, record 3, English, - Simpson%20forceps

The credit for the invention of the precursor of the modern forceps to be used on live infants goes to Peter Chamberlen of England (circa 1600). Modifications have led to more than 700 different types and shapes of forceps. In 1745, William Smellie described the accurate application to the occiput, rather than the previously performed pelvic application, regardless of the position of the head. In 1845, Sir James Simpson developed a forceps that was designed to appropriately fit both cephalic curvatures and pelvic curvatures. In 1920, Joseph DeLee further modified that instrument and advocated the prophylactic forceps delivery. In an era in which many women labored and delivered under heavy sedation, forceps deliveries became common. ... When forceps deliveries are performed, Simpson forceps... is the instrument most commonly used for outlet- and low-forceps deliveries. 1, record 3, English, - Simpson%20forceps

The Glenn Research Center is a NASA center, located in Cleveland, Ohio between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and the Rocky River Reservation(Part of the Cleveland Metroparks). Glenn is a NASA research center, whose primary mission is to develop science and technology for use in aeronautics and space. It was established in 1942 as part of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics(NACA) and was later incorporated into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) as a laboratory for aircraft engine research. It was initially named the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory after funding approval was given in June 1940. It was renamed the Flight Propulsion Research Laboratory in 1947, the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in 1948 and the NASA Lewis Research Center in 1958. On march 1, 1999, the Lewis Research Center was officially renamed the NASA John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field after John Glenn(American fighter pilot, astronaut and politician) and George W. Lewis(head of NASA from 1919 to 1947). 1, record 14, English, - Glenn%20Research%20Center

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster.... Rattle :... Even though there are no sounds in the vacuum of space, it is very noisy inside the International Space Station. A lot of the noise comes from the rattling and creaking of fans and events. Student Activity : Acquire a large, clean empty cardboard box(top or bottom removed), big enough to fit easily and comfortably over a person's head, leaving ample room for ventilation. Sit the box on the floor or table, open side down, and tap or scratch lightly on the outside of the box using only your hands. Next, place the box over your head and repeat the procedure. Comment on the loudness of the sounds you hear. Relate this to conditions inside the International Space Station. Student Challenge : Acquire a simple, inexpensive household fan. Affiche «Rock'n'roll spatial». [...] Bruits : [...] ISAS utilizes "aerodynamic lifting bodies" to conduct space research and observations, and is developing launch vehicles and satellites for such purposes. In its former guise as part of Tokyo University Institute of Industrial Science in 1955, the organization conducted the horizontal flight tests of pencil rockets, and as Tokyo University Aerospace Research Center, it launched Japan's first artificial satellite, Ohsumi, in 1970. These entities disappeared in 1981 in a "progressive amalgamation" under the direct control of the Ministry of Education. The head office of ISAS is at Sagamigahara in Kanagawa Prefecture, and the test range is at Uchinoura in Kagoshima Prefecture. 3, record 25, English, - Institute%20of%20space%20%26%20astronautical%20Science

Headspace sampling. Traditional methods for g.c. Nicholas Negroponte and Richard Bolt pioneered the notion of computerized work-arounds for transmitting facial presence, but their apparatus required each participant to have a mask of the others present in his or her communication space; images of facial movements would be projected into the masks, creating an inexpensive and relatively effective three-dimensional simulation of a literal talking head. The facial mask is created solely within the computer through the use of shape-acquisition and facial modeling systems. 1, record 33, English, - facial%20mask

High-Consistency System. Figure 11-18 shows a representative system where pulp is handled in the 25% to 28% consistency range. Typically, a press is used to raise the feed consistency to about 30%. Fresh caustic or oxidized white liquor along with the magnesium protector is added to the pulp at the discharge of the press. A thick stock pump then transfers the pulp to a fluffer via a feed pipe in which a gas-tight plug is formed. The fluffed pulp flows down the pressurized reactor as a loose bed, while gaseous oxygen is continuously dissolved into the liquid phase and reacted with the pulp.... Oxygen gas is added to either top or bottom to maintain a partial pressure within the 90 to 130 psi range. Relief is taken from the head space at the top of the tower to remove combustibles and other noncondensible gases, and control overall reactor pressure. At the bottom of the tower, the reacted pulp is diluted with post-oxygen filtrate and pumped at about 6% consistency to a blow tank. 2, record 36, English, - high%2Dconsistency%20oxygen%20delignification

For area heating, horizontal-blow unit heaters in exterior zones should be located so as to blow either along the exposure or toward it at a slight angle. Where possible, multiple units should be arranged so that the discharge airstreams support each other and create a general circulatory motion in the space... Horizontal unit heaters should have discharge outlets located well above head level, and both horizontal and vertical units should be so applied that the heated airstream will be delivered to the occupied zone at temperatures and velocities which are not objectionable. where possible, units should be located so that the discharge air flow is into open spaces, such as aisles, and not directly on the occupants. 1, record 40, English, - horizontal%2Dblow%20unit%20heater

1, record 40, French, - a%C3%A9rotherme%20%C3%A0%20soufflage%20horizontal

Other life-science experiments use crew members as experimental subjects. One is a NASA "Autogenic Feedback" experiment, designed to investigate the extent to which prior training can help astronauts to use voluntary control to reduce the effects of space sickness. Discomfort and nausea can have serious effects on crew members’ effectiveness, especially during the first two days of a mission. Statistically, it seems to affect about 50 per cent of people selected for spaceflight. Three of the Spacelab 3 crew received pre-flight training in recognising and controlling the symptoms; a control group of two did not. All wear electrodes to record such parameters as heart and respiration rate, sweating, etc., plus accelerometers to monitor head and body movements : these seem to have a relationship to space sickness. 1, record 42, English, - autogenic%20feedback%20experiment
