The rod puppet or stick puppet is supported by a rod held in one hand, while the other hand operates the rods attached to the puppet's hand. Rod puppets are full-length figures supported by a rod running inside the body to the head. These figures are manipulated from below; separate thin rods move the hands and the legs when necessary, allowing the individual joints to move in a relatively natural manner making the figure appear lifelike. 1, record 5, English, - rod%20puppet

The marotte is the most elementary form of rod puppet. Originally, the word "marotte" referred to a jester's stick : a wand topped with a head that was trimmed with particoloured ribbons and bells. Today, the term "marotte" refers to a puppet controlled from below with a single central rod. In French, the term "marotte" can be used even when other rods are added to control the arms, as long as the head and limbs of the marotte are fixed to the central rod and move on the same axis as the stick. 2, record 7, English, - marotte

2, record 7, French, - marotte

Timpani are typically struck with a special type of drumstick fittingly called a timpani stick or timpani mallet. Timpani sticks are used in pairs. They have two components : a shaft and a head. The shaft is typically made from wood-usually hickory, cherry, birch, persimmon, or maple-or bamboo, but may also be made from aluminum or graphite. The head of the stick can be constructed from a number of different materials, though felt wrapped around a wood core is the most common. Other core materials include felt and cork, and other wrap materials include leather. Sticks can also have exposed wood heads. These are used as a special effect and in authentic performances of Baroque music. 2, record 11, English, - timpani%20mallet
