Sideward movement. This rarer form of locomotion is found only in a few North American and African desert snakes. In a general way it is something like walking since the parts of the body behind the head and in front of the tail are used like legs to support the body and are alternately lifted and lowered. While the tracks made by all other snakes are an uninterrupted sliding track, sideward movement produces a discontinuous twin set of tracks like one might find in a two-legged animal. In August, 2007, the Settlement Workers in Schools(SWIS) program sponsored a pilot project to prepare newly arrived youth for entry to eight(8) high schools in Ontario. Called Newcomer Orientation Week or NOW, this intensive orientation initiative was piloted in six(6) high schools in Toronto, one(1) in Peel Region and one(1) in Hamilton. The NOW program was strategically positioned to occur just prior to the beginning of the school year. In NOW, former newcomer students are trained to lead the activities with the newly arrived students. The overall concept of NOW is that newcomer youth begin to feel more comfortable in the school setting and, if they run into difficulties, know how to get support-from PLs, teachers and/or SWIS workers. The overall goal of NOW is : To give newcomer youth a head start in their new school by familiarizing them with the school building and routines, linking them to students already attending the school, and orienting them to sources of help as well as the “culture” of the Ontario educational system.

Le Programme d'aide préscolaire aux Autochtones des réserves vise à préparer les jeunes enfants des Premières nations à leurs années d'école, en tenant compte de leurs besoins émotionnels, sociaux, de santé, nutritionnels et psychologiques. Cette initiative favorise l'élaboration de projets qui regroupent les éléments de programme suivants : culture et langue, éducation, promotion de la santé, nutrition, aide sociale et engagement parental. Par ailleurs, le programme encourage la mise sur pied de projets, placés sous l'autorité des communautés des Premières nations, qui ont pour but d'inculquer un sens de fierté et un désir d'apprendre, d'aider à l'acquisition des compétences parentales, de favoriser le développement émotionnel et social, d'accroître la confiance et d'améliorer les relations familiales. Il vise également à aider les parents à améliorer leurs compétences en vue de contribuer au développement sain de leurs enfants.

[In flame spectroscopy], a burner in which fuel and oxidant are thoroughly mixed inside the burner housing before they leave the burner ports and enter the primary-combustion or inner zone of the flame. This type of burner usually produces an approximately laminar flame, and is commonly combined with a separate unit for nebulizing the sample.

The second type of burner, used in most commercial instruments, is the premix chamber burner, sometimes called the laminar-flow burner.... The fuel and support gases are mixed in a chamber before they enter the burner head(through a slot) where they combust. The sample solution is again aspirated through a capillary by the "Venturi effect" using the support gas for the aspiration. Large droplets of the sample condense and drain out of the chamber. The remaining fine droplets mix with the gases and enter the flame. As much as 90% of the droplets condense out, leaving only 10% to enter the flame.
