Néanmoins, au bout d'un grand nombre d'heures d'utilisation, il est possible que la tête devienne légèrement aimantée. Il faut dans ce cas la désaimanter à l'aide d'un appareil spécial appelé «démagnétiseur» ... Si l'on continue à passer des bandes magnétiques sur un magnétophone dont les têtes conservent une certaine aimantation, on constate un manque de fréquences aiguës, une augmentation du bruit de fond et surtout, l'on risque d'effacer partiellement l'enregistrement existant sur la bande.
