The heading indicator (HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it’s operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i.e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off.

The directional gyroscope is used in aircraft and is sometimes called a self-levelling free gyroscope corrected for drift.

Le conservateur de cap, également appelé directionnel, est un gyroscope libre dont l'axe est orienté horizontalement selon la direction qui lui a été assignée lors de sa mise en rotation. Cette orientation sera prise pour référence horizontale. En choisissant le nord magnétique comme référence, cet appareil indiquera le cap magnétique de l'avion. Il faudra le «caler» avant chaque vol lorsque l'avion est aligné sur la piste (piste dont on connaît l'orientation).

Le conservateur de cap, ou gyroscope directionnel, est l'un des trois instruments à gyroscope. Aligné avec le compas, il donne une indication précise et stable concernant le cap magnétique de l'appareil. Le conservateur de cap constitue une aide importante car le compas est sujet à des erreurs causées par l'accélération, la décélération et la courbure du champ magnétique terrestre, particulièrement sous les hautes latitudes. Il arrive fréquemment que le compas oscille; il est particulièrement difficile à lire dans les turbulences ou pendant les manœuvres. Fonctionnement. Le gyroscope du conservateur de cap pivote dans un plan vertical. Une carte comportant des caps maintient son orientation lorsque l'avion tourne. Le mouvement apparent de la carte donne au pilote une indication précise et instantanée du cap de l'avion et de la direction dans laquelle il tourne. La carte est marquée de 5 degrés en 5 degrés, avec une indication chiffrée tous les 30 degrés et les points cardinaux repérés par N, S, E, O.

A flight director is a highly sophisticated system that electronically collects the information provided by a number of instruments, feeds this information into a computer and presents it in two visual displays. The two instruments that provide this visual display are a horizontal situation indicator (HSI) and an attitude director indicator (ADI). Usually the flight director installation is combined with an autopilot system. The entire package is then known as a flight control system.

The HSI, or Horizontal Navigation Indicator or Pictorial Navigation Indicator, is perhaps one of the most useful although misunderstood instruments around... it combines your directional gyro and Nav indicator into one instrument that reduces pilot workload by providing heading, course reference, course deviation and glide slope information all in one visual aid... You may also consider a slaved HSI. Slaving automatically compensates for gyro heading errors and keeps your HSI in agreement with your compass. It uses a magnetic flux sensor mounted in the wing or tail of your aircraft to sense changes in magnetic heading and sends corrective signals to your HSI.

Directional Compass... The compass displays the directional heading of the Gizmo in degrees, shown in both analog and digital format. The dial is accurate within 23 degree increments; the digital readout is accurate to smaller values.

Heading Hold (HH) or Heading Lock. A feature mode of some gyros that stands out by its property to hold the heading of a helicopter and resist the tendency to weathervane. Once trimmed, the tail needs very little input to hold a directional heading, even in high cross-wind conditions.

The unique method of supporting the now enhanced well proven C. PLATH gyrosphere by means of mere buoy ensures north stabilization during short power failures. For example, after a three minute gyrocompass power failure, no more that two degrees of deviation may be expected. Once power has been restored, the gyrocompass will return quickly to the correct heading without requiring the usual settling period. The combined effect of the twin rotors and the liquid damping system prevent latitude error.

Two new tracking functions, BeaconTrac and OBS-Trac, expand tracking capabilities of the new Bendix RDR-1400 digital colour weather radar, according to the company.(...) BeaconTrac generates an inbound course to a discrete beacon. This course line is generated from the beacon display and can be rotated 360 degrees around the beacon with the HSI(Horizontal Situation Indicator) course selector. BeaconTrac will operate up to 80 nmi(about 150 km). Using the HSI course selector to position the BeaconTrac line, the pilot can readily determine an intercept or approach path. Once on BeaconTrac and heading inbound, the RDR-1400 displays left/right deviation to the beacon.
