Angular rate gyro accuracy is characterized by two parameters: scale factor and drift. The scale factor describes the capability of the gyro to accurately sense angular velocity at different angular rates ... Gyro drift characterizes the ability of the gyro to reference all rate measurements to the nominal zero point. It appears as an additive term on the gyro output, so any actual drift away from a given or predetermined value will cause the angular errors to accumulate.

The free gyro... can be converted to a directional reference by remounting its case with the spin axis horizontal and the indicator axis vertical. The indicator will then give the airplane's heading. Gyro drift is countered by slaving the instrument to the Earth's magnetic field, via either a separate magnetic compass or a flux valve device.

OBS

The change in azimuth (direction) of the spin axis is often referred to as "drifting": sometimes "tilting" and "drifting" are collectively called "apparent wander."

L'usage fait donner des appellations différentes à cette composante de rotation instantanée [...] : lorsqu'elle est due à un phénomène déterministe et connu, on l'appelle précession gyroscopique; lorsqu'elle est due à un phénomène aléatoire, ou bien que l'on ne maîtrise pas, on l'appelle dérive gyroscopique.

OBS

Ce mouvement est dit «mouvement de précession» s'il est provoqué volontairement, et «dérive» s'il est dû à un élément perturbateur.

Bakanae is caused by the fungus Fusarium. While it is generally thought of as a seedling disease, it can be observed throughout the growing season. Infected seedlings are taller and more slender and are often visible arching above the healthy rice plants. As the season progresses, bakanae-infected plants may die before reaching maturity, or if they survive to heading, the panicles they produce are mostly empty. The fungus can over winter in the soil and residue as spores on the coat of infested seeds, leading to infected plants in the field the following season.

bakanae: A japanese word meaning "foolish seedling" used to describe the seedborne disease that causes abnormal elongation of rice plants.

Laser Position Measurement. A commercially available position measuring device, Lasernet, was donated by the Namco Controls Corporation. A single narrow-beam laser is continuously swept across the field at a fixed height. A reflector of known geometry on the vehicle reflects the beam back to the device, which reports the initial angle, in the local geographic frame, at which a reflection is detected and the angular width over which the reflection is continuously detected. Knowing the geometry of the reflector, which should be independent of the heading of the aircraft, is sufficient to determine the vehicle's two-dimensional position in the local geographic frame.
