A small battery operated lamp wore on the forehead which is used by the climber in the dark of night or right before dawn.

Headlamps come in two conformations: those with the whole unit, including batteries up on the headstrap ...; and those with only a light bulb-and-lens unit on the headstrap and a separate battery unit....

One of the most necessary tools of the Alpine climber is his headlamp. Without it, alpine strats are impossible except on moonlit nights. Keep the batteries close to the body where they can be warm; they are four times more efficient at body temperature than at freezing.

A headtorch is also needed because many climbs start and finish in the dark, and some climbs last many days.

Lampe électrique, légère et peu encombrante, portée sur le front, munie d'un réflecteur et qui comporte un boîtier d'allumage relié par un fil à un projecteur orientable. Elle est utilisée dans l'obscurité du soir ou du matin et elle permet de chercher les détails des aspérités rocheuses. Elle est très pratique pour l'alpiniste, car elle lui permet de garder les mains libres et de plus la lumière se dirige dans la même direction que son regard.

La lampe frontale est très utile lors de la marche d'approche, pour peu qu'on quitte le refuge avant le lever du jour, ce qui est fréquent. Légère et peu encombrante, elle se range ensuite facilement dans le sac. En outre, dans les courses exceptionnelles ou quand une cordée est en perdition, on ne peut pas toujours bivouaquer avant la fin de la journée et les alpinistes doivent continuer à grimper dans l'obscurité.
