Measured from the source of its chief headstream, the Missouri, it is 3, 710 miles long. The Mississippi River proper rises in North Minnesota and flows south, forming borders of nine states, for 2, 350 miles, receiving the Missouri at St Louis and the Ohio(main eastearn stream) at Cairo, Illinois, to a great delta on the Gulf of Mexico.
