La sophrologie a été créée en 1960 par A. Caycedo, neuropsychiatre espagnol. Elle permettrait, selon son fondateur, au sujet de prendre conscience de ses véritables possibilités mentales, de dominer ses pulsions, de diminuer l'aspect néfaste de son environnement, de ses habitudes. C'est, selon son créateur, une science de la conscience. La sophrologie ne s'attache pas à imposer une volonté comme dans l'hypnose, mais à consolider et à épanouir les propres possibilités du sujet, avec son acceptation. Les méthodes employés sont diverses : écoute de la voix, musique stéréophonique, fixation d'objets.
