The observed cloud forms adapt themselves to separation into fairly definite groups. Clouds occur generally in "heap" forms or "sheet" or "layer" forms, or combinations of these. The term "veil clouds" is very aptly used at times for certain of the sheet clouds, particularly the precipitating forms.

The layer cloud types comprise Cirrus, Cirrocumulus, Cirrostratus, Altocumulus (except Altocumulus castellanus), Altostratus, Nimbostratus, Stratus, and Stratocumulus.

Pour s'y reconnaître dans ces genres de nuages et leurs appellations, distinguons parmi tous les aspects variés des nuages trois formes fondamentales : 1) Les nuages en voile, en nappe ou en couche plus ou moins uniforme et dont les noms se terminent tous par le suffixe stratus. Ce sont par ordre d'altitude décroissante : Cirrostratus, Altostratus, Nimbo-stratus et Stratus.

Même si, dans la pratique, on confond généralement la nappe et la couche, le terme «nuage en nappe» est la meilleure expression pour marquer l'opposition avec une autre classe de nuages, les nuages en amas, qui se caractérisent quant à eux par leur grande extension verticale.

Le nuage en voile est un nuage en nappe dont les contours et les dimensions ne sont pas clairement définis.
