HEAP LEACHING [7 records]

Record 1 2026-02-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Processing of Mineral Products
  • Mineral Processing (Metallurgy)
DEF

A solution in hydrometallurgical treatment from which all possible valuable constituents have been removed.

CONT

Heap leaching is often the most cost-effective way to extract value from gold or copper ores. Heap leaching involves placing ore-grade material on an impermeable liner foundation with a solution collection system of drainpipes and irrigating the surface with either cyanide solution(for gold) or acid(for copper). Within the heap, chemical reactions occur which liberate the payable metal from the rock. The resultant solution, called pregnant leach solution(PLS), reaches the liner and the collection pipes, and then reports to a storage facility(pond) for processing where the metal is removed, the solution conditioned, and re-applied to the HLP [heap leach pad] as barren leach solution(BLS).

Record 2 2013-11-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Processing of Mineral Products
DEF

A process whereby gold is extracted by heaping broken ore on sloping impermeable pads and continually applying to the heaps a weak cyanide solution which dissolves the contained gold.

OBS

The gold-laden solution is then collected for gold recovery.

  • Préparation des produits miniers
DEF

OBS

[...] la solution enrichie en or est ensuite recueillie et l'or, récupéré.

DEF

A process used for the recovery of copper from weathered ore and material from mine dumps [in which] the material is laid in beds alternately fine and coarse until the thickness is roughly twenty feet.

OBS

[This material] is treated with water or the spent liquor from a previous operation. ... The liquor seeping through the beds is led to tanks ...

OBS

Heap leaching is applied to ores where the grade is too low to carry the cost of haulage and processing in a conventional concentrating or vat-leaching operation.

DEF

CONT

Leach pads have a foundation of impermeable clay overlaid with a tough plastic liner covered by protective layers of sand and gravel. Large ore heaps are built on these pads.

CONT

Heap leaching is a relatively simple process where low grade ores are stacked on a leach pad and then treated with a solution to recover precious values such as gold, silver, and copper metals.

CONT

The pit will be partially, but not fully, backfilled. Over in Powers Gulch, the leaching pad will contain spent ore that cannot be neutralized.

Although heap leaching is widely practiced, it is not entirely suited to Canadian climatic conditions; however, important advances are being made in the technology to harness bacterial leaching to provide an economically viable biohydrometallurgical process to extract and recover secondary metal values from sulphide ores....

CONT
