Contrails are composed primarily of water in the form of ice crystals and may remain visible for short periods of time if the humidity is low.... It began at the World Table Tennis Championship held in Japan on 6 April 1971, when the Chinese ping pong team formally invited the US team to play in their country on an all expense paid trip. Called "the ping heard ’round the world" by Time Magazine, the resulting ping pong diplomacy may have been a combination of an orchestrated public relations ploy by the Chinese government and two unsuspecting ping pong players from opposite sides of the world.

"Women in Black" was inspired by earlier movements of women who demonstrated on the streets, making a public space for women to be heard-particularly Black Sash, in South Africa, and the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, seeking the "disappeared" in the political repression in Argentina. Women in Black as we know it today began in 1988 in Israel.... [The Dictionary of American Regional English] notes a similar term "devil’s lane," first appearing around 1872, meaning the unusable strip of land between two parallel fences, often the result of neighbors being unable to agree on a common fence. And another term, "devil’s footstep," dates back to around 1860 and means "a spot of barren ground." So it’s not surprising that a strip of land next to the street, unusable by anyone, would be christened the "devil strip."

According to The Dictionary of American Regional English(DARE), which pays close attention to such local lingo, "devil strip" is heard almost exclusively in Northeastern Ohio, up around Akron. DARE suggests that the term may arise from the strip's legal status as a sort of "no man's land" between public and private property.

In terms of numbers this is the most important category of combat aircraft; yet, if the media area is to be believed, the general public have never heard of it, so attack aircraft have to be called either "fighters" or "bombers". Their origin lay in aircraft of 1916-18 called ground strafers or trench fighters which were armoured to survive in close proximity to a land battle whilst doing what they could to harass the enemy land forces.
