In a telemedicine system, a patient is geographically removed from the presence of a doctor or other healthcare provider. For example, the patient could be at home instead of on site at a healthcare facility. Telemedical devices enable the healthcare provider to monitor the health status of a patient and potentially diagnose and treat some medical problems without the need for the patient to travel to the healthcare facility. The use of telemedical systems has the potential to reduce the cost of healthcare, and to improve the quality of healthcare through increased patient monitoring. Various known telemedicine systems provide a device to a patient that enables the patient to transmit medical data to a doctor or healthcare provider. Some devices are configured to record biosignals, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration rates, and transmit data of the recorded biosignals to a database for later review. 1, record 3, English, - biosignal

Victims of neglect not more negative. In contrast, Buisman found that victims of neglect are not more negative with their offspring later in life. What she did discover was that the autonomous nervous system of these parents is more likely to be hyperreactive in a resting state and potentially stressful parenting situations. This was apparent from an increased heart rate and decreased heart rate variability. This could mean that the regulation of the autonomous nervous system is more likely to be disrupted in people who have experienced neglect in their childhood. Here too, Buisman found a link between being a victim and a perpetrator of neglect, but this appeared to be less strong than with abuse. 3, record 7, English, - perpetrator%20of%20neglect

In a remote patient monitoring system, physiological data is collected through biomedical sensors in order to evaluate the well-being of patients outside of the hospital setting. Its purpose is to move traditional clinical settings into people's homes, where they live, work, and play. In order for the appropriate decisions to be made, the data collected is wirelessly transmitted to the healthcare provider. Using this type of tele-health, physiological data such as heart rate/pulse rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, blood pressure, and blood oxygen saturation can be measured and transmitted. 1, record 13, English, - remote%20patient%20monitoring%20system

The RMSSD is the root mean square of successive differences between normal heartbeats. This value is obtained by first calculating each successive time difference between heartbeats in milliseconds. Each of the values is then squared and the result is averaged before the square root of the total is obtained. The RMSSD reflects the beat-to-beat variance in HR [heart rate] and is the primary time domain measure used to estimate the vagally mediated changes reflected in HRV [heart rate variability]. 4, record 14, English, - root%20mean%20square%20of%20successive%20differences%20between%20normal%20heartbeats

After about 15 minutes of lying flat, the table is quickly tilted to raise your body to a head-up position-simulating a change in position from lying down to standing up. The table will then remain upright for up to 45 minutes, while your heart rate and blood pressure are monitored. The principal advantage of pulsed Doppler is range resolution, or the ability to sample blood flow in a small, specific area whose location and depth can be varied. A disadvantage of pulsed Doppler, however, is that there are limits to the maximum frequency shifts that can be unambiguously displayed at any given depth. To avoid range ambiguity, the ultrasound pulse must travel down to the selected depth and back before the next pulse can enter the heart. Therefore, the PRF [pulse repetition frequency] or sampling rate is limited at each depth. 4, record 30, English, - pulsed%20Doppler%20ultrasonography

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors are members of rhodopsin-like G-protein coupled receptor family. They play several important roles; they mediate many of the effects of acetylcholine in the central and peripheral nervous system and modulate a variety of physiological functions, such as airway, eye and intestinal smooth muscle contraction, heart rate and glandular secretions. The receptors have a widespread tissue distribution and are a major drug target in human disease. Officially known as the Extravehicular Mobility Unit or EMU, the suit has two main components : the Space Suit Assembly(SSA) and the Primary Life Support System(PLSS). The SSA [space suit assembly] includes :[1] urine collection device : collects body wastes, which are later transferred to the Shuttle's waste management system. [2] bioinstrumentation system : monitors the astronaut's heart rate during spacewalks. [3] liquid cooling and ventilation garment : a "long-john" made of spandex, containing 90 metres of small tubes that circulate cooling water over the body. [4] communications carrier assembly : a "Snoopy" cap containing headphones and microphones for two-way communications. Newer models allow up to five people to talk together. [5] lower torso assembly : the pants and attached boots... [6] hard upper torso(HUT) : the top half of the suit, made of fibreglass, which supports the Primary Life Support System. 2, record 53, French, - combinaison%20spatiale

Fetal heart detectors are devices that use ultrasonic waves to provide audible and/or visual information. They consist of an ultrasound-frequency electrical generator and appropriate ultrasound transducers housed in a probe that is placed on the maternal abdomen. Ultrasonic heartbeat detectors amplify the audible frequency shift signal of the returned ultrasonic waves and deliver it to speakers or headphones; the heart rate is determined either by measuring the timing of the peaks in the Doppler signal or, more accurately, by using automated autocorrelation procedures. 1, record 54, English, - ultrasonic%20fetal%20heart%20detector

Crystal methamphetamine is a colorless, odorless form of d-methamphetamine, a powerful and highly addictive synthetic (man-made) stimulant. Crystal methamphetamine typically resembles small fragments of glass or shiny blue-white "rocks" of various sizes. Like powdered methamphetamine (another form of d-methamphetamine), crystal methamphetamine is abused because of the long-lasting euphoric effects it produces. Crystal methamphetamine, however, typically has a higher purity level and may produce even longer-lasting and more intense physiological effects than the powdered form of the drug. 2, record 57, English, - crystal%20methamphetamine%20hydrochloride

Crystal methamphetamine use is associated with numerous serious physical problems. The drug can cause rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, and damage to the small blood vessels in the brain--which can lead to stroke. Chronic use of the drug can result in inflammation of the heart lining. Abomasal impaction. Impaction of the abomasum develops in pregnant beef cows during cold winter months when cattle have decreased water intake and are fed poor-quality roughage. It also has been seen in feedlot cattle fed a variety of mixed rations containing chopped or ground roughage(straw, hay) and cereal grains and in late-pregnancy dairy cows on similar feeds. Complete anorexia, scant feces, moderate distention of the abdomen, weight loss, and weakness are usually the initial signs. Body temperature is usually normal but may be subnormal during cold weather. A mucoid nasal discharge tends to collect at the external nares and on the muzzle; the muzzle is usually dry and cracked due to the failure of the animal to lick its nostrils and to the effects of dehydration. When conducting studies and experiments, researchers pay attention to constants and variables to draw conclusions. Constants are the factors that do not change throughout the experiment, and variables are the factors that vary or have the potential to vary. While there are many different kinds of variables, the two most commonly discussed are the dependent and independent variables. … The dependent variable is the factor that receives the stimulus. Researchers measure dependent variables to explore the potential effects of the stimulus, because the aptly named dependent variable is dependent upon the stimulus to be changed. For example, in a study on the relationship between the length of a bicycle ride and the riders’ heart rate, the dependent variable is the heart rate, which the length of the bicycle ride may affect. … The independent variable is the factor altered or varied to give various amounts of the stimulus. 3, record 62, English, - dependent%20variable

Beta blockers, such as propanolol, are not useful for people with general social phobia who are anxious in most social situations; instead, propanolol may be useful for people who are anxious about specific performance situations, such as presenting a speech before an audience... Propranolol falls into the broad pharmacologic category known as beta blockers. Beta blockers block specific sites in the central nervous system known as beta-adrenergic receptor sites. When these sites are blocked, heart rate and blood pressure are reduced and patients become less anxious. Because of this, propranolol is useful in treating chest pain, high blood pressure, and excessive nervousness. Unfortunately, propranolol often makes breathing disorders, such as asthma, worse because it tends to constrict breathing passages and sometimes causes fluid to build up in the lungs if it excessively depresses the heart. 2, record 67, English, - propanolol

The heart of the fluidized bed system is the reactor. The reactor is a refractory-lined steel shell with a bed of small inert particles, usually sand. Air is blown through the sand from the bottom which causes the bed to behave like a fluid. This fluid bed has an extremely high heat transfer rate which aids in combustion. Most of the combustion occurs in the fluid bed with the balance taking place in the vapour space above. Most fluid reactors add air only through the sand bed. 1, record 84, English, - sand%20bed

The closest one could come to having a "little person" or an "inner eye" that perceives the brain's activity would be in the self-symbol-a complex subsystem that is a model of the full system. But the self-symbol does not perceive by having its own repertoire of smaller symbols(including its own self-symbol-an obvious invitation to infinite regress). Rather, the self-symbol' s joint activation with ordinary(nonreflexive) symbols constitutes the system's perception. Perception resides at the level of the full system, not at the level of the self-symbol. If you want to say that the self-symbol perceives something, it is only in the sense that a male moth perceives a female moth, or in the sense that your brain perceives your heart rate-at a level of microscopic intercellular chemical messages. 1, record 97, English, - self%2Dsymbol
