A disease of beef cows with large energy requirements, e.g. during very cold weather or when fed poor quality roughage with low energy content and poor digestibility. The abomasum impacts with dry roughage and the abdomen distends on the right; clinical signs are scant feces and emaciation.

Abomasal impaction. Impaction of the abomasum develops in pregnant beef cows during cold winter months when cattle have decreased water intake and are fed poor-quality roughage. It also has been seen in feedlot cattle fed a variety of mixed rations containing chopped or ground roughage(straw, hay) and cereal grains and in late-pregnancy dairy cows on similar feeds. Complete anorexia, scant feces, moderate distention of the abdomen, weight loss, and weakness are usually the initial signs. Body temperature is usually normal but may be subnormal during cold weather. A mucoid nasal discharge tends to collect at the external nares and on the muzzle; the muzzle is usually dry and cracked due to the failure of the animal to lick its nostrils and to the effects of dehydration. The heart rate may be increased, and mild dehydration is common.

In the large bowel, fibre is partly digested by bacterial fermentation producing special fatty acids, which are essential for a healthy bowel. Fibre provides bulk and can also hold extra water. This action helps prevent constipation, haemorrhoids and diverticular disease and may be protective against bowel cancer. A high fibre diet is also associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Foods high in fibre are digested more slowly and this slows the rise in blood glucose after eating, which is useful for people with diabetes.

A peanut blanching machine [includes] an endless conveyor having a horizontal top reach extending along a predetermined path and adapted to carry nuts thereon. A rubbing apron is disposed in spaced relation above the reach and the nuts are adapted to be frictionally engaged between the two elements to facilitate removal of the skins. blanching : This process removes the skin and sometimes the heart, reducing the bitterness associated with the high tannin content in these portions. Blanching may also provide further cleaning. Dry blanching, water blanching, spin blanching and alkali blanching are used. The method employed depends on the kernel texture required and end use. Kernels are then electronically sorted by color to remove defective product.
