HEAT BUILD UP [8 records]

Record 1 2017-11-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Maneuvers
  • Airport Runways and Areas
OBS

When hard braking is applied for slowing down or stopping after an aborted takeoff or emergency stop situation, the tire is locked up and can’t rotate, causing rapid heat buildup. When the tire begins to smoke, rubber debris build up under the tire. As the skid continues, more and more debris cause a barrier to form against the water, preventing it from escaping past the tire. A seal has now been created... heating the water under the tire to a point where steam exists. The steam is strong enough to support the tire and prevent runway contact. Should the skid continue, the tire enters reverted rubber state as more heat, steam and rubber debris continue the process.

CONT

An arrangement of wood that is standing end on and is built like a pyramid or cone. The centre is fired, and as the core burns away the outside logs fall inwards, constantly feeding the heart of the fire. This type of fire gives good radiation and even with wet wood burns well.

CONT

Every novice knows the wigwam fire--indeed if a child who has never made a fire were told to build one, he would surely turn up with a wigwam, for it is the natural arrangement. But nevertheless, it is not without importance in the craft, for it is the core of every fire lay no matter how elaborate. Viewed in its own right and aside from its contribution as the starting torch of other lays, it has few qualifications as a cooking fire if one intends to do more than stew a pot of tea, because its heat is all thrown to the center of the pyramid and offers no spread for the utensils, and its coals all drop to one small spot in the center. It is good for light, however, and is prized in the evening. First the coil of birch-bark, or the chip of fat pine, or the handful of tiny twigs broken into a pyramid, or the fuzz-stick; then a few softwood sticks from the size of a pencil up to that of your little finger, stacked around it in wigwam fashion, and lastly the hardwood sticks of finger and thumb size. Remember to keep it tall and slender. And keep it small--a foot high and a foot wide at the base.

CONT

Over time, some stronger ions(sulfate, chloride, fluoride) may build up in solution. These ions(called heat stable salts) are removed using a solvent conditioning unit. These units are ancillary to the process and can be supplied as small, skid mounted packaged units. The process may run several days or even weeks without a conditioning unit.

Whirly Vent Ventilation. The Whirly Vent ventilation system is effective all year round, removing hot and moisture-laden air from roof cavities and rooms and replacing summer heat and winter damp with fresh air. [Text accompanied by an illustration.]

CONT

Whirly Bird Vents. These vents have a rotating top section that assist the flow of warm air to disperse. [Text accompanied by an illustration].

CONT

Makes a dramatic difference to roof space temperatures. The in roof Fan changes air in the roof space between 50 and 70 times per hour, too fast for heat to build up much beyond the outside temperature. You would need 30 or more whirly type wind turbines and a strong breeze to achieve this rate of airflow.... Existing "whirly birds" can be incorporated as part of the exhaust system but have to be supplemented with additional vents as their free air area is far too small.

CONT

DEF

Linking of an exogonic reaction and an endogonic reaction in such a way that there is only a small net change in free energy, resulting in an overall reversible reaction. In living organisms, anabolic reactions are coupled with catabolic reactions resulting in the build up of complex molecules, but with an overall loss of energy as metabolic heat.

CONT

Coupling is brought about when an enzyme causes a substrate that is to be consumed ... to react with one of the cell’s small-molecule energy donors (say, ATP) to give rise to an energized activated substrate molecule. The subsequent decomposition of this activated substrate in the synthetic reaction will release significant energy, which will result in the synthetic reaction .... The need for cells to carry on simultaneously many different coupled reactions requires cells to devote a significant part of their total metabolic activity to the constant replenishment of their ATP supply. In animal cells and in most bacteria, the formation of ATP is coupled with the breakdown of food molecules that are even more rich in energy. In cells that carry out photosynthesis, the energy of sunlight is used directly to make ATP.

CONT
