Solar heating is heat created by the energy of the sun. Solar heat can be either active or passive. Passive solar heating, as the name suggests, takes advantage of the heat created through natural means(heat created when sunlight passes through a window and becomes trapped inside a building). Active solar heating systems are made up of three components : the solar collector, energy storage, and distribution pipes or ducts. Sunlight is collected by absorber panels, conditioned if required, and distributed through the building by a heat transfer fluid or by air.

Hot water for domestic purposes can be provided at low cost by the thermosyphon solar heater. The heat collector is a flat plate of blackened metal(steel, aluminum, or copper), to which tubes are attached in any manner which provides good thermal contact. The flat plate collector type generator. In this design a solar collector is rigidly mounted, facing south at an angle to the horizontal not very different from the latitude of the location.... The collected heat is transferred to a working gas which drives a heat engine coupled to an alternator.

It has been reported that as early as 1909 a pump associated with a flat plate collector was in operation in California. Later, before World War II, an Italian company in Lecco developed the "SOMOR" solar water pump, with a power up to 2 KW. The flat collectors were directly connected to the engine, thus avoiding a heat exchanger.

In most metallic [solar collector] systems, especially those using a number of metals or a reactive metal such as aluminum, the heat transfer fluid can have a significant impact on corrosion. In aqueous solutions, the concentration of dissolved chemicals, heavy metal ions, and pH of the fluid must be controlled. Deionized or demineralized water has been used successfully but additional steps are usually taken. These include the use of a gettering column to trap heavy metal ions before they enter critical parts of the system and inhibitors which stabilize the metal ions and reduce their reaction with less noble metals.
