Fire-tube boilers may be designed for vertical, inclined, or horizontal positions. One of the most generally used types is the horizontal-return-tube(HRT) boiler. In the HRT boiler, part of the heat from the combustion gases is transferred directly to the lower portion of the shell. The gases then make a return pass through the horizontal tubes or flues before being passed into the stack. 2, record 4, English, - horizontal%20return%2Dtube%20boiler

The ... horizontal return tube boiler ... gets it’s name from the horizontal fire tubes which run back-to-front through the lower half of the boiler drum. The gas burner is located under the front half of the boiler drum. Measurement of Heat of Combustion. In boiler practice, the heat of combustion of a fuel is the amount of heat, expressed in Btu, generated by the complete combustion(or oxidation) of a unit weight(1 pound in the United States) of fuel. Calorific value or "fuel Btu value" are other terms used... For accurate heat values of solid and liquid fuels calorimeter determinations are required. However, approximate heat values may be determined for most coals if the ultimate chemical analysis is known. 2, record 9, English, - heat%20of%20combustion

Flaming combustion burns wood fuel gases. It is the burning of the gases that produces the flame. The radiant heat of flaming combustion also preheats and pre-ignites unburned wood. Glowing combustion occurs only in cooler sections of the fire. It is the same chemical reaction as flaming combustion but burns wood fuel solids. Some of the wood glows red with glowing combustion. Sometimes flaming combustion proceeds until only ash, water and carbon dioxide remain; at other times wood cools off enough to stop burning before all the charcoal is consumed. 4, record 13, English, - glowing%20combustion

The influence of oxygen is important because of growing interest in applying oxygen enrichment to natural gas-fired industrial furnaces. The advantage of adding oxygen to the air or fuel stream, while keeping the air-to-fuel ratio constant, is increased heat flux-this results in more efficient combustion design. The Fire Radiative Power product(FRP, in megawatts) provides information on the measured radiant heat output of detected fires. It has been demonstrated in small-scale experimental fires that the amount of radiant heat energy liberated per unit time(the Fire Radiative Power) is related to the rate at which fuel is being consumed. This is a direct result of the combustion process, whereby carbon-based fuel is oxidised to CO2 with the release of a certain "heat yield. "Therefore, measuring this FRP and integrating it over the lifetime of the fire provides an estimate of the total Fire Radiative Energy(FRE), which for wildfires should be proportional to the total mass of fuel biomass combusted. 1, record 29, English, - fire%20radiative%20power

Basically, the gasification of solid fuels takes place at elevated temperatures. The heat required for the heating and conversion, is either provided through partial combustion(autothermic process) or through supply of external heat(allothermic process). Compared to the autothermic gasification, the allothermic gasification has the advantage that the fuel does not have to be partially burned in the gasification zone, in order to provide the necessary heat. In the allothermic gasification, the heat can be provided from any external sources, such as for instance high-temperature core reactors, but also from combustion chambers, wherein a fraction of the gas product is burned. 3, record 36, English, - allothermal%20gasification

A certain class of ceramic and metallic materials can be manufactured by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis method. Even though by now this process has included reaction systems of the solid-gas and solid-liquid types, the original work was directed towards the reactions investigated where not only the reactants but also the final products formed in the solid phase. Condensed phase combustion is a complex phenomenon of theoretical and practical interest, in particular, as a method to synthesize materials. This combustion synthesis process involves a self-sustained combustion wave which propagates through initial reactants converting them into a desired product. In condensed phase combustion the initial reactants as well as final, and possibly intermediate products, remain in the condensed phase throughout the reaction. Though the combustion process occurs in a heterogeneous medium composed of reactive particles, typical models of condensed phase combustion treat the medium as homogeneous. 4, record 56, English, - condensed%2Dphase%20combustion

The Ausroc 3(A3) launch vehicle has a liquid fuelled motor that burns JA-1 kerosene with liquid oxygen, and uses regenerative cooling. The motor produces 35 kN at sea level and has a burn time of 80 seconds. The motor is gimballed to facilitate pitch and yaw control. The wall of the combustion chamber, throat and expansion nozzle consists of 102 stainless steel tubes stacked side by side running parallel to the motor axis. The tubes will be brazed together and the assembly wrapped in a carbon fibre composite. The composite wrapping is used to relieve to tubes of the hoop stress generated by the combustion pressure(2 MPa), whilst the tubes contain the combustion heat(3500 K). The top end of the motor has a kerosene inlet manifolt, oxygen dome and injector block. The kerosene inlet manifold delivers kerosene to every second motor tube, where it travels down to the arse end of the motor. Here it enters the lower kerosene manifold which is a simple plenum ring. This allows the kerosene to flow into the other alternate tubes which deliver it back up to the inlet manifold. The inlet manifold then directs the kerosene to the injector block, which sprays it and the liquid oxygen into the combustion chamber. 2, record 74, English, - liquid%20fuelled%20motor

The operating principal of the RMB [Rapid Mix Burner] staged firing configuration is to bum as much of the fuel as possible under the high excess air, ultralow NOx conditions. As a result of the fundamental principle mentioned above, this is done by operating the burners air rich(under conditions similar to normal firing, but with higher excess air and with a moderate amount of FGR), where the maximum theoretical NOx, formation is very predictable. Heat is extracted from these air-rich combustion products and cool furnace recirculation products are entrained. The staged fuel is then mixed with the air-rich burner products and combustion is completed. The excess air at the boiler outlet is thus similar to that with normal firing. 3, record 84, English, - air%20rich

Densified Pellet Technology. Pellets are dried ground wood or other biomass waste compressed into small cylinders about 6 mm(1/4 in.) in diameter and 25 mm(1 in.) long. The pressure and heat created during their production binds the pellets together without the need for additives. Pellet-burning appliances include a hopper to hold at least 20 kg of fuel and a screw auger to move the pellets from the hopper into the combustion chamber. Pellets usually burn cleanly because they are fed to the combustion chamber at a controlled rate and are matched with the right amount of combustion air. These appliances are generally able to operate at lower emission levels than natural firewood appliances. 2, record 86, English, - densified%20pellet

The great majority of heat pumps work on the principle of the vapour compression cycle. The main components in such a heat pump system are the compressor, the expansion valve and two heat exchangers referred to as evaporator and condenser. The components are connected to form a closed circuit... A volatile liquid, known as the working fluid or refrigerant, circulates through the four components. In the evaporator the temperature of the liquid working fluid is kept lower than the temperature of the heat source, causing heat to flow from the heat source to the liquid, and the working fluid evaporates. Vapour from the evaporator is compressed to a higher pressure and temperature. The hot vapour then enters the condenser, where it condenses and gives off useful heat. Finally, the high-pressure working fluid is expanded to the evaporator pressure and temperature in the expansion valve. The working fluid is returned to its original state and once again enters the evaporator. The compressor is usually driven by an electric motor and sometimes by a combustion engine. 4, record 90, English, - vapor%20compression%20heat%20pump

Most boilers are of the "water tube" type, where water circulates within the tubes and heat transfer occurs from the hot combustion gases on the outside of the tubes to water on the inside.... The water is initially heated in the tubes nearest to the combustion flame; it then rises to the "steam drum" where vapor is separated from liquid. The liquid travels down connecting tubes to a lower drum, usually called the "mud drum". Here, the sludge formed from the concentration of mineral impurities is removed by manual or automatic "blowdown". The steam drum is larger in diameter than the mud drum to provide space for the separation of steam and water. 1, record 96, English, - mud%20drum

1, record 96, French, - r%C3%A9servoir%20%C3%A0%20boues

In recent years, fluidized bed combustion of biomass has become commercial practice. Two types of combustors have been developed :(1) the conventional dense-phase or bubbling bed combustor, and(2) the circulating fluidized bed combustor. Fluidized bed combustors offer several advantages. There is a high mass of inert material in the combustor, capable of absorbing energy from fuels that combust in a highly volatile fashion. The bed media contain sufficient energy that very wet fuels(e. g., 65% MCg) can be burned successfully.... Conventional dense-phase fluidized bed systems have grate release levels in the vicinity of 5. 6 GJ/m2 grate equivalent and 470 MJ/m3 of volume(Envirosphere, 1980). Rates of heat release for circulating fluidized beds are somewhat higher. 1, record 99, English, - bubbling%20bed%20combustor

Flash Calcining. Flash or gas suspension calcining is a recent development, and at least two manufacturers are promoting this technology as another alternative for pulp mill lime reburning. Fuller, for example, has over 25 flash calcining systems in operation on a variety of materials. The heart of the system is a swirl-type furnace in which the combustion of fuel is in intimate contact with the material being calcined. Fuller claims that the turbulent swirling mixture produces a uniform temperature profile, and that conventional flame temperatures are never encountered because the material absorbs the excess heat instantaneously. 1, record 100, English, - flash%20calcining
