Matrix effects can be divided into two kinds, physical and chemical. Physical matrix effects depend on the physical properties of the sample and generally relate to the ablation step of LIBS [laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy]. That is, differences between the specific heat, latent heat of vaporization, thermal conductivity, absorption, etc., of different matrices can change the amount of an element ablated from one matrix compared with another matrix even though the properties of the ablation laser pulse remain constant. 2, record 2, English, - physical%20matrix%20effect

Cork Insulation. Cork is the outer bark of an oak tree that flourishes only in the area surrounding the western Mediterranean Sea. Instead of being fibrous in structure, the bark of the cork oak is composed of tiny cells, so small that there are 200 million of them to every cubic inch of cork bark. These tiny cells give cork a high resistance to the passage of heat. Each cell is filled with still air, and next to a vacuum, still air is the best insulation known. Because the cells are so tiny, no convection currents in the air can be established to reduce its insulation properties. The cellular structure gives the material its high degree of natural moisture resistance. Each tiny cork cell is a perfect geometric shape, having 14 sides. The volume of cork includes more than 75% air. Its thermal conductivity is 0. 26 Btu per square foot per hour per degree temperature difference at 60 degrees F.(metric), and 0. 30 Btu per square foot per degree temperature difference at 180 degrees F(metric). 2, record 8, English, - cork%20insulation

Since the low cost sensor technologies available present several limitations to their inclusion in this system, it was developed and implemented a low cost sensor, as described by Valente et al. (1997), based on the heat-pulse and capacitance methods. In the first method the maximum temperature rise measured at some distance from a line heat source can be used to determine the volumetric heat capacity and hence the water content of a porous media, such as soil. The second method relates the volumetric water content with the capacitance change of a probe, inserted in the soil, according to its dielectric properties. Simultaneous use of both methods improves sensor accuracy, gives built-in fault detection capability, and makes possible self-calibration procedures. 2, record 9, English, - heat%20pulse%20method

The Boltzmann equation, also often known as the Boltzmann transport equation, devised by Ludwig Boltzmann, describes the statistical distribution of one particle in a fluid. It is one of the most important equations of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, the area of statistical mechanics that deals with systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium; for instance, when there is an applied temperature gradient or electric field. The Boltzmann equation is used to study how a fluid transports physical quantities such as heat and charge, and thus to derive transport properties such as electrical conductivity, Hall conductivity, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. 1, record 12, English, - Boltzmann%20equation

Normally, a blow-molded part is cooled externally by the mold cavity, forcing heat to travel through the entire wall thickness. With the poor thermal conductivity of plastic resins, molding cycle times of heavy parts can be considerable. Internal cooling systems are designed to speed the mold cooling time, thus reducing costs by removing some of this heat from the inside. Several systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches : liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods. 1, record 24, English, - internal%20cooling%20system
