Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Grapes begin their growth cycle in the spring when average daily temperature is about 10 °C(50 °F). To reach maturity, they require a certain amount of heat above 10 °C during the growing season. This amount of heat, called the heat summation, is calculated by totalling the number of degrees of average daily temperature over 10 °C for each day of the growing season. A heat summation of about 1, 800 is required for successful growth. If the heat summation is less than required, the grapes will not ripen; they will reach the end of the growing season with insufficient sugar and too much acidity.... Where the heat summation is much greater than required,... the grapes mature earlier and with less acidity and colour than those produced under cooler conditions. Factors influencing the heat summation of a vineyard and, therefore, grape composition include exposure... air drainage..., soil temperature(above 10 °C during the growing season), and soil moisture content... 3, record 6, English, - heat%20summation

Affinage par refusion sous laitier. Procédé E.S.R. [... 3, record 9, French, - affinage%20par%20refusion%20sous%20laitier

Since the low cost sensor technologies available present several limitations to their inclusion in this system, it was developed and implemented a low cost sensor, as described by Valente et al.(1997), based on the heat-pulse and capacitance methods. In the first method the maximum temperature rise measured at some distance from a line heat source can be used to determine the volumetric heat capacity and hence the water content of a porous media, such as soil. The second method relates the volumetric water content with the capacitance change of a probe, inserted in the soil, according to its dielectric proprieties. Simultaneous use of both methods improves sensor accuracy, gives built-in fault detection capability, and makes possible self-calibration procedures.... In a capacitance-based method, the soil moisture can be obtained by measuring the capacitance that varies with the dielectric properties of materials. 1, record 13, English, - capacitance%2Dbased%20method

The process of through-drying... Essentially, a hot, unsaturated gas is passed through a wet, porous material(e. g., the tissue web) by imposing a pressure differential across the material. As the hot gas passes through, heat is transferred to evaporate the water, and the gas leaves at a reduced temperature and with increased water vapor content. The intimate contact between the hot gas and the web, coupled with the large internal surface area of the porous material, produces exceptionally high drying rates. 1, record 41, English, - through%2Ddryer

1, record 41, French, - s%C3%A9cheur%20%C3%A0%20air%20traversant

Representative operating data for a six-effect set of evaporators are given in Table 10-1. As the solids content increases, so does the difference between the boiling liquor temperature and the condensing temperature of its associated vapor. This temperature difference(called the "boiling point rise") significantly reduces the available driving force for heat transfer in the higher-solids effects and is a major factor limiting the number of effects which are feasible in a set of evaporators. 1, record 42, English, - boiling%20point%20rise

Low energy gas(LEG) is produced by air gasification processes where a portion of the input wood(about 20 percent) is combusted with air to provide process heat. LEG can be used to displace fossil fuels by retrofitting oil or gas-fired boilers, kilns, dryers and space heaters. In addition, it can be cooled and cleaned for use in internal combustion engines to generate shaft power or electricity. Due to the low energy content, economics dictate that the gas be used immediately and not piped great distances. 1, record 44, English, - low%20energy%20gas

The dust-extracting and heat recovery systems are extremely important auxiliary components. Thorough washing is necessary to bring the DS content of the gases below 200 mg/Nm3. This figure can only be lowered below 100 mg/Nm3 by electrostatic dust-extraction but for this improvement the gas must be cooled to 200 ° C. This means that the cost of a heat recovery boiler may have to be added to the already high price of an electrostatic dust extractor. 1, record 45, English, - electrostatic%20dust%20extraction
