The set point theory [is] arguably the most influential and debated theory of body weight control. It suggests that like temperature in a room controlled by a thermostat, body weight(or body fat) is controlled by an equivalent device(ponderostat, adipostat) residing in the hypothalamus. Borrowing from the engineering vocabulary, this device receives feedback input from the controlled parameter(room temperature, body weight or body fat), and generates an error signal in a comparator if this feedback signal is deviating from a preset reference value(set point). The error signal is used to turn up or down any mechanisms that determine the level of the controlled parameter(heat production or dissipation in the case of room temperature, metabolizable energy-in or energy lost in the case of body weight/adiposity). 4, record 1, English, - ponderostat

2, record 1, French, - pond%C3%A9rostat

Psychological thermogenesis : The psychological state may influence energy expenditure, as anxiety(or emotional state), anticipation, and acute stress stimulate adrenaline secretion, leading to increased heat production. For example, the energy cost of sitting at ease and sitting playing chess may differ by as much as two-fold—a difference that cannot entirely be attributed to muscular movement. Furthermore, the increase in energy expenditure when pilots are under air traffic control(or take off) is inversely related to their level of experience. 2, record 2, English, - psychological%20thermogenesis

Mothballing is the process of stabilizing a facility so that no damage occurs to the facility should it make sense at a later time to incur the capital expenditures associated with continuing to operate, extending the life, or repowering the facility. Typically, a decision to mothball a facility might be made as a hedge against, or in anticipation of, changes in market conditions; i. e., increases in relative fuel prices, or an increase in the value of installed capacity.... Typical activities involved in mothballing a facility might include the following types of activities intended to preserve existing equipment :-’Racking Out’ or removal and storage of motor control center circuit breakers or 'switchgear’(this would also be done for a facility that has been retired and is scheduled for dismantling)-Placing a heat source or desiccants in the furnace to maintain a temperature above the dew point(at which condensation collects and corrodes the boiler structures.)-The application of grease or other coatings to reduce corrosion of components such as pumps and motors.-The installation of an air desiccant system to blow dry air through the steam turbine, condenser, boiler tubes and pipes. 2, record 12, English, - mothballing

It's rarely installed well enough to be a good air barrier, but that's OK because in most homes it's stapled to a material that usually is : plywood or OSB [oriented strandboard]. Housewrap is the material. Controlling liquid water and air are the functions. The standard varieties don’t control water vapor or heat. 2, record 13, English, - housewrap

3, record 16, French, - catalycit%C3%A9

StratSat provides a geo-stationary platform at 20 km altitude capable of remaining on-station for up to five years. Payloads include high speed Internet services, direct broadcast TV, mobile telecommunication, etc. The envelope operates as a super-pressure hull(i. e. with no ballonet pressure control system). The hull will be of laminated fabric construction with Tedlar/Teflon, helium/weather barrier developed from AT-10/04. Multiple catenary curtain system supporting a payload module enclosed completely by the envelope. [The] payload module... comprises a single structural module with an externally mounted payload/mission system. The payload module provides a home for all of the airship's primary systems except for the propulsion system. The systems are close packed within the highly insulated module ensuring efficient heat and energy management. The payload module is pendulum stabilised within the envelope. The solar array provides the sole source of renewable energy for the airship. The array is placed over the upper quarter of the hull and extends over approximately three-quarters of the length of the craft. The array can be realigned to the daily sun location/angle by the roll rotation of the whole airship. The energy collected by the solar array is stored for use during the night in the series of batteries. Located in the stored for use during the night in a series of batteries. Located in the payload module, the batteries run the propulsion system, airship services and provide power to the mission system for up to 14 hours(during winter). The airship is propelled and steered by means of a ’Contra-Rotating Coned Rotor’ mounted on a tailcone at the rear of the envelope, as a part of a compound propulsion system. The unit provides longitudinal thrust(to counter the prevailing stratospheric winds) and lateral force(for manoeuvering) to enable the airship to hold station within a 1 km cube. The airship will be equipped with a multi-channel Flight Control Sy 7, record 18, English, - StratSat%C2%AE

Trips employing auxiliary trip units include the Loss of Load trip and the APD – High trip. The Loss of Load trip is a contact input from the Electro Hydraulic Control System control oil pressure on each of the four high pressure stop valves. … 10. Loss of Load. The Loss of Load(turbine stop valve(TSV) control oil pressure) trip is anticipatory for the loss of heat removal capabilities of the secondary system following a turbine trip. The Loss of Load trip prevents lifting the pressurizer saftey valves, PORVs and MSSVs in the event of a turbine generator trip. Thus, the trip minimizes the pressure and temperature transients on the reactor by initiating a trip well before reaching the Pressurizer Pressure – High trip and pressurizer safety valve setpoints. The four RPS Loss of Load reactor trip channels receive their input from sensors mounted on the high pressure TSV actuators. Since there are four high pressure TSVs, one actuator per valve and one sensor per actuator, each sensor sends its signal to a different RPS channel. When the turbine trips, control oil is dumped from the high pressure TSVs. When the control oil pressure drops to the appropriate setpoint, a reactor trip signal is generated. 1, record 19, English, - load%20reactor%20trip%20channel

The prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-," along with their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-" and "p-"), appear in italics and are ignored in alphabetizing. According to the actual chemical nomenclature rules in organic chemistry (in 2003), the numbers designating the positions of the disubstitution groups (1,2- for "ortho-," 1,3- for "meta-" and 1,4- for "para-") are to be preferred to the symbols "o-," "m-" and "p-." Furthermore, the prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-" should not be used anymore, and their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-," and "p-") will soon be judged to be avoided, if not totally condemned. 8, record 30, English, - 1%2C2%2Ddichlorobenzene

Established plants were repeatedly tested for KMV and afterwards small plants in tubes were propagated for complete control of growth and flower characteristics. The flowering trial was set up with 10 plants of each of the 177 virus-free clones. All plants were uniform in growth and only a very few plants with a slightly lighter flower colour were observed. The best clone was selected and grown for further comparison with the existing selected Charme clone from the Danish Growers Elite Plant Station. For elimination of KMV it is recommended to give mother plants heat treatment for 2 months before excision of meristems. [From an abstract found in Dialog]. 2, record 32, English, - flowering%20trial

Cycling sprinkler. A development by the sprinkler industry is a sprinkler that cycles on and off as needed.... Under normal conditions, the pilot valve is held closed by the snap disc. Water in the piston chamber holds the piston closed. When the snap disc is heated to the rated temperature, it opens the pilot valve and releases the water from the piston chamber. This allows the piston to open and water to flow from the sprinkler. When the snap disc cools to approximately 100°F, it closes the pilot valve. 5, record 40, English, - on%2Doff%20sprinkler

Leaks... fall into two basic types : internal leakage [such] as a thin oil film is built into the working parts of a hydraulic system. This lubricates the mating surfaces of valve spools, cylinder pistons, and other moving parts. Oil is not lost through this normal internal leakage since it eventually returns to the system reservoir. However, too much internal leakage will slow the operation of the system and waste power through the generation of heat. In some cases, it may cause cylinders to creep or drift. Or it may cause loss of oil control in the valves.... External oil leaks not only look bad-they can be expensive and hazardous.... A small leak can also be the signal for a hydraulic rupture that may injure a person while putting the machine out of operation.... Every joint in a hydraulic circuit is a potential point of leakage. This is why the number of connections in a system is kept at a minimum. Components can leak, but care in assembly and use of new seals and gaskets during overhaul will help to reduce this problem. 2, record 44, English, - leak

5, record 49, French, - thermor%C3%A9gulation

Thermoacoustics is the study of the thermoacoustic effect and the attempt to harness the effect as a useful heat engine. A thermoacoustic refrigerator uses the thermoacoustic effect to move heat with sound. … Thermoacoustic refrigerators … use inert gasses which are both readily available, inexhaustible, and completely environmentally benign! And, because they can utilize waste heat as an energy source, they are extremely environmentally friendly. In addition, since thermoacoustic refrigerators do not use the compressors, lubricants, sliding seals, and other gizmos present in vapor compression refrigerators, the thermoacoustic refrigerator should be more reliable. In fact, a heat driven refrigerator does not need any moving parts in the refrigeration cycle! Finally, since thermoacoustic systems tend to work at higher frequencies and at single frequencies, noise and vibration control is actually easier than for a conventional refrigerator-so thermoacoustic refrigerators should be even quieter than the refrigerators of today. 1, record 57, English, - thermoacoustic%20refrigerator

Environment Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) : The orbiter's Environmental Control and Life-Support System purifies the cabin air, adds fresh oxygen, keeps the pressure at sea level, heats and cools the air, and provides drinking and wash water. The system also includes lavatory facilities. The cabin is pressurized to sea level(14. 7 psi) with 21 percent oxygen and 79 percent nitrogen, comparable to Earth's atmosphere. The air is circulated through lithium hydroxide/charcoal canisters which remove carbon dioxide. The canisters are changed on a regular basis. Excess heat from the cabin and flight-deck electronics is collected by a circulating coolant water system and transferred to radiator panels on the payload bay doors where it is dissipated. The fuel cells produce about seven pounds of water each hour. It is stored in tanks, and excess water is dumped overboard. The lavatory unit collects and processes body waste, and also collects wash water from the personal hygiene station. The lavatory unit, located in the middeck area, operates much like those on commercial airlines but is designed for a weightless space environment. 3, record 64, English, - environment%20control%20and%20life%20support%20system

As main feature, submerging the arc(s) in the slag can enhance the heat transfer between the arc(s) and the melt... The foaming can be difficult to control properly since the evolution of the chemical and physical conditions in the slag/steel system that affect foam height is generally unknown. Presently, the slag height and the foam formation is still estimated in most of the installations by subjective acoustic and visual means of the furnace operator, the operating practices being either rigidly pre-established or let to the free interpretation of furnace operators. 2, record 67, English, - slag%20foaming%20practice

Other sources define "building shell" as "The skeleton of a building to which the finished exterior and interior are applied. It includes the building foundation", which refers to a completely different concept. We conclude that for a majority of authors the two terms may be used as synonyms and that for some others "building shell" refers to the skeleton (structure) rather than the envelope of the building. 12, record 68, English, - building%20envelope

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. In the heat of a fire, however, the air within the chamber expands faster than it can escape through the metering hole. This expansion causes the pressure within the chamber to increase, forcing the metal diaphragm against contact points in the alarm circuit. An alarm signal to the system control unit results. This type of detector is most often combined in one unit that also has fixed-temperature capability. 1, record 69, English, - pneumatic%20rate%2Dof%2Drise%20spot%20detector

1, record 69, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20ponctuel%20thermov%C3%A9locim%C3%A9trique%20pneumatique

Methods of measuring evapotranspiration generally are divided into two categories : water budgeting and energy budgeting. The former method relies on accurate accounting of water flow into and out of a control area.... Energy budget methods rely on an accurate accounting of energy to and from the land surface and generally assume one-dimensional energy flow. Because the energy needed to evaporate water is relatively large(about 580 calories per gram), ET, or latent heat, can represent a significant component of the energy budget. Net radiation is the difference between incoming shortwave(solar) radiation and outgoing shortwave and longwave radiation, sensible heat is the energy transported from the land surface by air movement(convection), latent heat is the energy transported away from the surface by evaporating water, and soil/water heat is the heat that goes into changing the temperature of the soil or the water standing on the land surface. Any of these components may reverse in direction-for example, latent heat is added to the surface by condensation(dew formation), and net radiation is directed upward at night. 1, record 84, English, - energy%20budget%20method

The Ausroc 3(A3) launch vehicle has a liquid fuelled motor that burns JA-1 kerosene with liquid oxygen, and uses regenerative cooling. The motor produces 35 kN at sea level and has a burn time of 80 seconds. The motor is gimballed to facilitate pitch and yaw control. The wall of the combustion chamber, throat and expansion nozzle consists of 102 stainless steel tubes stacked side by side running parallel to the motor axis. The tubes will be brazed together and the assembly wrapped in a carbon fibre composite. The composite wrapping is used to relieve to tubes of the hoop stress generated by the combustion pressure(2 MPa), whilst the tubes contain the combustion heat(3500 K). The top end of the motor has a kerosene inlet manifolt, oxygen dome and injector block. The kerosene inlet manifold delivers kerosene to every second motor tube, where it travels down to the arse end of the motor. Here it enters the lower kerosene manifold which is a simple plenum ring. This allows the kerosene to flow into the other alternate tubes which deliver it back up to the inlet manifold. The inlet manifold then directs the kerosene to the injector block, which sprays it and the liquid oxygen into the combustion chamber. 2, record 86, English, - liquid%20fuelled%20motor

G. Cotter Enterprises, Inc. has made tremendous advancements toward a finely tuned microwelding process. Microwelding originated with the mold makers needs in mind. [Since it is an] ultra sensitive method of welding, this skill is now applied to medical parts, electronic components, sensitive finished machined surfaces, polished surfaces, and any surfaces that would not lend themselves to conventional welding. The science behind microwelding is due to the tighter control of the arc in close spaces. The less heat added to the part, the least amount of distortion will result. Minimal sink(sink marks on the material surface due to melting into the base metal) is maintained through this process. Ultimately, precision microwelds lead to less rework, which in turn assist in lower cost for machining. In fact, many microwelds can be finished by hand. 1, record 89, English, - microwelding

This type of equipment fires a gas-propelled stream of finely-graded abrasive particles through a precise nozzle and directs them against the work. Material is removed from the work by impingement of abrasive particles upon it. This type of action generates very little heat. The abrasion process can be very exact, because of the precise control that a user has over particle direction as well as propellent pressure. Typically, the size and shape of the nozzle can be varied from a 1. 14 mm orifice for higher production models to a 127-um orifice for laboratory models. Applications for abrading equipment are varied. Cutting, deflashing, cleaning, microburring, etching, and restoring can all be accomplished through the use of abrading equipment. When abrading equipment is linked to a pantograph, the unit's handpiece can cut intricate patterns in silicon semiconductors. 1, record 93, English, - abrading%20equipment

Environmental Control Systems Trainer. Additional training in the operation of the environmental control system was provided by the environmental control systems trainer which was a heavy shell mock-up with a prototype spacecraft environmental system. The device used was delivered to NASA in November 1960 and installed in a man-rated vacuum chamber at the U. S. Naval Air Crew Equipment Laboratory in Philadelphia(fig. 10-1(1)). During December of 1960 and January of 1961, the astronauts participated in a program of system familiarization that included being exposed to a simulated reentry heat pulse and approximately 2 hours of the expected postlanding temperature. During these runs, the astronauts wore the pressure suits and became familiar with function of the suits when associated with the environmental control system. However, since a provision had been made for simulating the suit function in the procedures trainer, this type of training was not considered essential This was particularly true since the astronauts received further first-hand familiarization to the environmental control system by participating in the preflight checkout of the spacecraft environmental control system at the launch site. 2, record 99, English, - man%2Drated%20vacuum%20chamber
