HEAT CRACK [9 records]

Record 1 2011-02-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Rubber
Universal entry(ies)
(C4H6)x
formula, see observation
DEF

A synthetic thermoplastic polymer made by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene with a stereospecific organometallic catalyst (butyl lithium), though other catalysts such as titanium tetrachloride and aluminum iodide may be used.

OBS

Oil-extendable synthetic elastomer polymer made from butadiene; resilience is similar to natural rubber; it is blended with natural rubber for use in tire and other rubber products.

CONT

The cis-isomer, which is similar to natural rubber, is used in tire treads due to its abrasion and crack resistance and low heat build-up. Large quantities are also used as blends in SBR rubber. The trans-isomer resembles gutta percha and has limited utility. Liquid polybutadiene, which is sodium-catalyzed, has specialty uses as a coating resin. It is cured with organic peroxides.

OBS

Also known under a large number of commercial designations, such as: Alfine; Budium RK 622; CB 10; Diene 35 NF; Dienite X 555; Dienite X 644; FCR 126; FCR 1261 (polymer); FCR 1261PD; Hystl; LCB 150; Polyoil 110; Polyoil 130; Quintol B 1000; S 820.

DEF

Nom générique des polymères du butadiène [...]

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Glass
DEF

Two sheets of plate glass with a sheet of transparent resinoid between, the whole molded together under heat and pressure; it will crack without shattering.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sortes de verre
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Space Physics
CONT

As these field lines move through the star's crust they should greatly heat it, consequently producing a lot of strain. Eventually this strain should cause the crust to crack, releasing a surge of magnetic energy which would interact with the tenuous particle atmosphere and produce copious soft gamma rays.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Cutting and Trimming (Machine-Tooling)
CONT

A new process, "abrasive waterjet cutting", was created by the introduction of abrasive particles into the waterjet, greatly increasing capabilities. The addition of abrasives to the waterjet stream expands cutting capability to almost any material known to man and makes it one of the most versatile tools in use today.... Abrasive waterjet is rapidly finding use in cutting hard, dense material such as glass, composites, metals, and fired ceramics. These materials are difficult to cut by older, conventional processes because they tend to fray, crack, splinter, shatter, or show heat effects.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Découpage et taillage (Usinage)
CONT

CONT

If you’re going to project photographs, you should first adhere them to a piece of annealed glass that will not crack from heat. This will also keep the photographs flat.

OBS

anneal : To treat a metal, alloy, or glass with heat and then cool to remove internal stresses and to make the material less brittle.

French

Domaine(s)

CONT

DEF

The process of subjecting glass to heat and subsequent gradual and uniform cooling for the purpose of toughening the glass and making it less likely to crack or break.

CONT

The annealing is done in an annealing oven (lehr) that today is automatically controlled and through which the glass passes on a conveyor belt.
