CONT

At selected locations in the U. S. Lab(9 ISPRs-International Standard Payload Racks) and the [Japanese Experiment Module-JEM](5 ISPRs), a low-temperature water loop(0. 6-10 °C or 33-50 °F) is provided via a 1. 3 cm(0. 5 in.) line with a quick-disconnect. The maximum return temperature on this loop is 21 °C(70 °F). A pressure drop of 40 kPa(5. 8 psid) is allowed across the inlet and outlet of both water loop interfaces. Payloads can also dissipate small amounts of heat into the cabin air. Depending on the temperature conditions set by the crew, a minimum of 500 W can be dissipated into both the U. S. Lab and Columbus(complement of all payloads within the module). Negotiations are underway with Japan on the allowable heat dissipation into the JEM.

Soft rime is a white ice deposition that forms when the water droplets in light freezing fog or mist freeze to the outer surfaces of objects, with calm or light wind... Soft rime formations have the appearance of white ice needles and scales; they are fragile and can be easily shaken off objects. Factors that favour soft rime are small drop size, slow accretion of liquid water, high degree of supercooling, and fast dissipation of latent heat of fusion.

First layer, second skin – your outer layers are useless without a good base, one that promotes both warmth and moisture transfer. The best base layer fabrics are synthetics such as polyester and polypropylene, as they conduct moisture away from the skin and into the protective layer or into the air. Do not wear cotton as a base layer. Cotton holds moisture, which then facilitates the rapid transfer of body heat, causing your core temperature to drop.

OBS

The layers break into three categories: base [layer], thermal [layer], and protective layer. These three layers work together to trap heat, wick moisture, breathe, block wind, and repel water.

CONT

An arrangement of wood that is standing end on and is built like a pyramid or cone. The centre is fired, and as the core burns away the outside logs fall inwards, constantly feeding the heart of the fire. This type of fire gives good radiation and even with wet wood burns well.

CONT

Every novice knows the wigwam fire--indeed if a child who has never made a fire were told to build one, he would surely turn up with a wigwam, for it is the natural arrangement. But nevertheless, it is not without importance in the craft, for it is the core of every fire lay no matter how elaborate. Viewed in its own right and aside from its contribution as the starting torch of other lays, it has few qualifications as a cooking fire if one intends to do more than stew a pot of tea, because its heat is all thrown to the center of the pyramid and offers no spread for the utensils, and its coals all drop to one small spot in the center. It is good for light, however, and is prized in the evening. First the coil of birch-bark, or the chip of fat pine, or the handful of tiny twigs broken into a pyramid, or the fuzz-stick; then a few softwood sticks from the size of a pencil up to that of your little finger, stacked around it in wigwam fashion, and lastly the hardwood sticks of finger and thumb size. Remember to keep it tall and slender. And keep it small--a foot high and a foot wide at the base.

Agencies working for NASA use this term for a lighter-than-air aircraft designed to explore the planets. An aerobot is a helium-filled balloon fitted with heaters that are powered by solar cells. During the day, solar energy will heat the helium and give it extra buoyancy; at night, the balloon will drop to lower altitudes or even touch the ground. A limitation of the design is that its movements cannot be fully controlled, though it may have some ability to dictate its altitude, perhaps through dropping ballast, releasing gas or managing its temperature. A big advantage of this design is that it doesn’t need fuel, which is expensive to transport and which runs out all too soon. Unlike satellites, aerobots fly in the atmosphere, so allowing experiments to be carried out on its chemistry. They can also view and record the ground from much lower altitudes than is possible with satellites. NASA plans to send a device of this sort to Mars in 2003, and possibly later to Titan, Venus and Jupiter.

  • Arc Welding
DEF

Any arc welding method in which the current is pulsed to utilize the advantages of the spray mode of metal transfer at average currents equal to or less than the globular to spray transition current. [Definition standardized by the AWS.]

CONT

Pulsed spray welding is a variation of the MIG welding process that is capable of all-position welding at higher energy levels than short circuiting arc welding. The power source provides two current levels; a steady "background" level, which is too low to produce spray transfer; and a "pulsed peak" current, which is superimposed upon the background current at a regulated interval. The pulse peak is well above the transition current, and usually one drop is transferred during each pulse. The combination of the two levels of current produces a steady arc with axial spray transfer at effective welding currents below those required for conventional spray arc welding. Because the heat input is lower, this variation in operation is capable of welding thinner sections than are practical with the conventional spray transfer.
